Jagdeep, a victim of partition was forced to make an earning at the tender age of eight years. He first began selling small items on the road and eventually landed in films when filmmaker B.R.Chopra spotted him on the road selling things and gave him a small role in his movie AFSANA.
Recalling his role Jagdeep in an interview said, ”I was lured to act because I was paid Rs 3/- for just clapping in a scene. The scene had another boy who had to deliver a single line dialogue written in Urdu. The boy was to be paid Rs 6/-. However to my luck the boy who had to deliver the dialogue could not utter his lines, while I spoke the lines effortlessly and earned Rs 6, an amount that I did not earn in one week! Thus I decided to become an actor and thankfully I got good movies.”
Recalling his famous scene in SHOLAY, Jagdeep said, ”Actually I had turned down the offer because the Sippy’s had not paid my balance amount for my role BRAMACHARI. However writers Salim-Javed were adamant to incorporate the scene in the film.” He adds, ”After my refusal the role was given to Pran Sahab but Pran, who had earlier done a similar role of Banne Khan in the movie ADHIKAR, declined it. So I was persuaded, finally I did and it became a milestone in Indian Cinema.”
