From folk singer to political rookie, Maithili Thakur is set to make headlines in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. At the age of 25, the popular Mithila-region artiste has been fielded by the Bharatiya Janata Party from the Alinagar constituency in Darbhanga district and, going by early results, she is leading by a massive margin. Thakur has said her chief motivation in entering politics is to “serve Bihar” – words that underline the seriousness of her switch from music to public life. HShe joined the BJP only sometime back and was declared as the party’s candidate from Alinagar in mid-October 2025. Here are five things about Maithili Thakur as she embarks on her first electoral journey:
Musical upbringing & early education
Born on July 25, 2000, in Benipatti village of Madhubani district, Thakur comes from a musical family. Her father Ramesh Thakur is a teacher of music and she, along with her siblings, received training right from an early age. Her schooling was unconventional: initially homeschooled until around class five and then she attended a municipal (MCD) school at around the age of 12-13.
Stellar rise in music and popular culture
While her stints in reality shows- Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Li’l Champs and Indian Idol Junior- did not push her into immediate fame, she did not give up. She went on to gain national attention with Rising Star in 2017, coming first runner-up. Later, her YouTube channel, folk versions in Maithili and Bhojpuri, along with classical training, helped garner a huge online following.
The political leap and seat selection In October 2025, BJP formally announced Thakur’s candidature from Alinagar, considered a strategic seat regarding youth and cultural outreach of the party. She filed her nomination, thanked the party leadership, and vowed to work for the welfare of the people of Alinagar. Early election results & winning momentum As the vote count continued, Thakur surged ahead of seasoned contenders. Reports confirm her winning margin swelling up to over 11,000 votes, thus placing her in a position to be one of the youngest MLAs in Bihar. “Like a dream” is how she explained the situation, promising that she would serve her constituents “as their daughter”. Vision and promises for Alinagar Thakur has pledged to work entirely on Alinagar’s development during her maiden term. Among her campaign lines are, for instance, visiting every village, working tirelessly, and even a promise to rename Alinagar into “Sitanagar” in the name of regional identity. With her blend of popular cultural appeal, youthful energy, and backing by a major party, entry into Bihar politics by Maithili Thakur is keenly watched. When she manages to convert her lead into victory, she will join that rare breed of crossover from folk music to legislative politics-and all that as one of the youngest legislators in the state.
