Just days before what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary, singer Akon’s wife, Tomeka Thiam, has filed for divorce. According to People.com, the filing cites irreconcilable differences, with the date of separation listed as “TBD.”

Thiam and Akon, 52, share a 17-year-old daughter named Journey. In the divorce filing, Thiam has requested joint legal custody of their daughter but seeks physical custody herself, allowing Akon visitation rights. She has also requested spousal support from the singer, while asking the court not to award him any in return.
Akon’s Views on Polygamy and Family Life
Akon has publicly shared his belief in polygamy, calling it a natural part of his culture. In a 2022 interview, he stated, “It’s part of our culture. Absolutely.” He explained that polygamy was the norm within his African heritage and criticized Western society for creating rules “without putting nature into account.”
The “Smack That” singer, who made his Bollywood debut with songs like “Chammak Challo” and “Criminal” in the 2011 film Ra.One, has claimed to have nine children. In 2023, musician Amirror stated she was one of Akon’s four wives.

Akon insists he is present in all his children’s lives, saying, “My job is to raise my kids to be responsible… and to protect their mother.” He also noted that while he may not attend every event, he uses FaceTime to stay connected.
