Jurassic World Star Jonathan Bailey on Breaking Barriers: Being Openly Gay in Hollywood

Bridgerton and Wicked star Jonathan Bailey is opening up about his evolving journey as an openly gay actor in Hollywood. At 37, Bailey is not only enjoying major success in his career but also helping reshape the entertainment industry’s outdated narratives.

“I’ve Unlearned the Idea of Feeling Limited”

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Bailey reflected on the industry’s long-standing challenges, particularly for queer actors. “You have to unlearn a lot of narratives about yourself that an industry tells you,” he said, acknowledging how being openly gay once meant limited roles especially romantic leads. “Historically, being an out gay actor meant you couldn’t play straight, and there weren’t any gay parts to play anyway. That’s obviously changed, massively.”

Bailey credits the progress to the efforts of previous generations of actors who have helped tear down barriers. Determined to continue that momentum, he is now stepping into larger roles including a key character in Jurassic World Rebirth. “You have to be excellent to prove that you can do it,” he shared. “Prejudice against sexuality is something to fight against, and what better way to do that than to play any kind of character.”

Could Jonathan Bailey Be the Next James Bond?

While promoting his projects, Bailey was asked on The Scott Mills Breakfast Show whether he’d consider stepping into the iconic role of James Bond. Though hesitant, he admitted, “It would be hard to say no.” Bailey joins a list of rumored names for the role following Daniel Craig’s departure in No Time To Die (2021).

Regardless of who’s cast, Bailey is confident about the franchise’s future: “I know that it’s going to be exciting whatever they do.”

As his star rises, Bailey continues to defy stereotypes and embrace roles that reflect Hollywood’s evolving landscape.
