Prince William and Princess Kate once again stepped into their roles as royal hosts on Wednesday, September 17, as they welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to the U.K. for an official state visit. The high-profile event began at Windsor Castle, where the Prince and Princess of Wales greeted the American president and his wife before escorting them to meet King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
After disembarking Marine One, President Trump, 79, greeted Prince William with a handshake and a pat on the shoulder. Turning to Princess Kate, he shook her hand and remarked, “You’re beautiful, so beautiful.”
For the occasion, Kate, 43, wore a maroon Emilia Wickstead dress, a Jane Taylor hat, and a brooch once owned by Princess Diana, adding a subtle nod to royal heritage.

Royal Duties and a Rare Second State Visit
This marks President Trump’s second official state visit to the U.K.—an unprecedented occurrence for a U.S. president. His first was in 2019 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. King Charles extended the invitation earlier this year through Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with the official “manu regia” letter hand-delivered to the White House in June.
A palace aide shared, “His Majesty has known President Trump for many years and looks forward to hosting him and the First Lady.”

State Banquet and Joint Engagements
Trump’s visit includes a state banquet on Wednesday night and a meeting with PM Keir Starmer at Chequers on Thursday. Meanwhile, Melania Trump and Princess Kate will team up for their first joint engagement at Frogmore Gardens, participating in a Scout activity with local children. Kate, a former Brownie, has served as Joint President of the Scout Association since 2020.
