Leave it to Martin Short to turn a wedding moment into an unforgettable comedy story. The actor recently revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live that he accidentally cut into Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s wedding cake during their reception, all because he genuinely thought it was meant for his table.
Martin explained that the wedding was a massive celebration with a stage, dance floor, musicians, and a huge tent. Toward the back of the tent were several lounge-style seating areas with couches and chairs for different groups of guests. The Only Murders in the Building crew was seated together, including Steve Martin, Paul Rudd, Julie Rudd, and others. Near their section sat a small but very real wedding cake.
Assuming that each seating area had its own cake, Martin said he picked up a fork and decided Steve Martin should not leave without having a slice. With a fork in hand and possibly a cocktail involved, Martin cut into the cake and served Steve a piece. That is when the entire table erupted, screaming that it was the actual wedding cake.
Realizing the magnitude of what he had done, Martin panicked. He admitted he tried to fix the situation by smoothing the damage with a fork, something he later acknowledged was not his finest idea. The cake had been cut into almost an hour before it was supposed to be formally presented to the couple.
Things escalated quickly as the wedding coordinator and chef were called in. According to Martin, the chef came out furious, questioning what had happened. The cake then underwent what Martin described as “surgery,” with the team attempting to restore it to presentation-worthy condition. In true Hollywood fashion, the cake survived, though it clearly had “a little work done.”
Martin also revealed that the group debated whether they should quietly leave the wedding to avoid further embarrassment. Even more nerve-wracking was the question of whether Selena would find out. Martin said they all agreed it would be best if she never knew.
That plan failed almost immediately. As Martin was leaving, Selena Gomez herself approached him and casually said she had heard he tried to eat her cake. Martin took it in stride, admitting that Steve Martin was so stunned by the whole incident that he “gained color” on the spot.
In the end, the cake made it to the couple, slightly altered but still beautiful. As Martin put it, not perfect, not great, but also not terrible. Just another chaotic, hilarious memory added to a very Hollywood wedding.
