After five years of dating, actress Nina Dobrev and Olympic snowboarder Shaun White have formally broken up. A source confirmed to PEOPLE that the split was amicable and conducted with “love and deep respect,” ending one of Hollywood’s most celebrated relationships.
Quiet Breakup After Public Events
The two were spotted together for the last time on August 31, 2025, in Los Angeles, when they were spotted hand in hand doing errands. Days later, Dobrev was seen at the premiere of Eternity during the Toronto International Film Festival without wearing her 5-carat engagement ring. Her fans also pointed out that her engagement post, pinned on her Instagram following White’s October 2024 proposal, is gone.
A Relationship That Built Up Over Time
Dobrev, 36, and White, 39, met briefly in 2012, but they didn’t meet until 2019 at a Tony Robbins seminar in Florida. An initial dinner together resulted in a funny moment when White understood Dobrev’s status: “People kept asking to take pictures with her. I was like, ‘What’s happening?'” he explained to PEOPLE in 2022.
Their bond intensified during the pandemic, when they quarantined and then moved in together. White took their romance public on Instagram in May 2020, posting photos of Dobrev cutting his hair in quarantine. “She really made that time in my life special,” he said.
From Olympics to Coachella: A Supportive Couple
During their time together, Dobrev and White were there for each other through all the milestones. She was at his side for his tearful last Winter Olympics in 2022, and the two of them frequently provided glimpses into their lives—red carpet premieres, music festivals, and world travel.
A Respectful Goodbye
While no longer together, sources note the separation was friendly. Both continue to be grateful for their time together and what they created—an end as mature and elegant as the relationship was.
