Sam Neill’s Ex Laura Tingle Reveals the Actor Was ‘Pretty Sick’ Before His Death at 78

Laura Tingle has opened up about Sam Neill’s final weeks, revealing the Jurassic Park star was physically exhausted after years of cancer treatment despite being cancer-free.

Sam Neill’s former partner, Australian journalist Laura Tingle, has shared an emotional glimpse into the beloved actor’s final weeks, revealing that although he had beaten cancer, years of intensive treatment had taken a devastating toll on his body. Speaking on Sydney Mornings following Neill’s death at the age of 78, Tingle said the Jurassic Park star had become increasingly unwell in the weeks leading up to his passing. “He’d been fighting various forms of cancer for at least the last five years,” she explained, adding that repeated rounds of chemotherapy and immunotherapy eventually left his immune system severely weakened. While the actor had successfully gone into remission from angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma earlier this year, Tingle said his body had simply become exhausted.

“He’d been pretty sick for the last couple of weeks,” she said, explaining that friends and loved ones had hoped he would recover once again.

Despite his declining health, Neill never lost his passion for acting. According to Tingle, working remained one of the greatest joys of his life.

“He loved to work,” she recalled. “He used to say, ‘I’m addicted to working.’”

That love for filmmaking never faded. Whether starring in blockbuster franchises like Jurassic Park or acclaimed dramas including The Piano, Neill found purpose every time he stepped onto a set.

Tingle also reflected on comments Neill made during a 2023 interview, when he admitted he wasn’t afraid of dying but would be frustrated because there were still so many things he wanted to do. She believes that feeling remained true until the very end.

Following the actor’s passing, tributes have poured in from across Hollywood. Steven Spielberg remembered Neill as “exceptionally collaborative,” while Laura Dern described her longtime friend as “a true and noble gentleman.” Nicole Kidman, who starred opposite him in Dead Calm, called him “one of the greats” and praised his kindness, intelligence and generosity throughout their decades-long friendship.

Neill’s family announced that he died surrounded by loved ones and emphasized that he remained cancer-free at the time of his death. They described his passing as sudden and unexpected while thanking the medical staff who cared for him during his final days.

Although his final battle left him physically exhausted, those closest to Sam Neill remember a man whose curiosity, humour and dedication to storytelling never disappeared. His remarkable body of work and the warmth he shared with colleagues and audiences alike continue to define a career that spanned more than five decades.
