The world of The Hunger Games will soon make its way back to the big screen in the franchise’s upcoming sixth installment, titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. On November 20, the first look at a number of characters from the film was finally released, giving fans an idea of what to expect from the high-stakes drama. At the center of this tale is the character of Haymitch Abernathy, who has been played by Joseph Zada, replacing the original, Woody Harrelson, in the first Hunger Games film.
The just-released trailer reveals the story during the 50th Hunger Games, also the second Quarter Quell, whereby twice as many people in each district are called to compete. Joseph Zada’s Haymitch is selected to represent District 12 against the overwhelming odds of surviving such a deadly game, protecting his fellow tributes, and keeping safe his family and girlfriend at home. As the bloodthirsty competition commences, President Coriolanus Snow, portrayed by Ralph Fiennes, watches the carnage with his traditional ruthlessness, building tension to fever pitch.
It boasts a star-studded cast, which includes Elle Fanning as young Effie Trinket, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman-the charismatic host of the Hunger Games-and Jesse Plemons as a young Plutarch Heavensbee. Other popular cast members shown in the trailer include Kelvin Harrison Jr., Glenn Close, Maya Hawke, McKenna Grace, Billy Porter, Lili Taylor, Whitney Peak, Ben Wang, Molly McCann, Iona Bell, Edvin Ryding, Kara Tointon, and Percy Daggs IV.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is a sequel to 2023’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and a prequel to the original 2012 film. It is based upon the 2025 novel of the same name written by Suzanne Collins. Francis Lawrence returns to direct, with the majority of filming taking place in Spain and other locations. American and Canadian fans can mark their calendars, as the film will be released on November 20, 2026.
