Popular clothing brand American Eagle has landed in controversy following the release of its latest ad campaign featuring actress Sydney Sweeney. While the Euphoria star looked stunning in a full denim outfit, the campaign’s play on the words “genes” and “jeans” sparked global backlash for allegedly promoting outdated beauty standards.
The Controversial Line
In the ad, Sweeney says, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality and even eye colour…My genes are blue.” The campaign tagline initially read “Sydney Sweeney has great genes”, which was later edited to say “jeans” after public criticism.
Brand Responds With Satirical Apology
American Eagle issued a tongue-in-cheek apology letter, stating:
“We sincerely apologise for featuring Sydney Sweeney in our recent ad. In hindsight, we underestimated the combined impact of her blue eyes, blonde hair and general hotness. Also, we did not realise how big her boobs would be. Our marketing team has been sent to denim sensitivity training.”
This sarcastic tone drew further criticism but also highlighted the brand’s attempt to defuse tension.
Mixed Internal Reactions
According to TMZ, an internal poll showed 70% of American Eagle’s customers liked the ad. An insider told the outlet, “This is yet another example of how social media doesn’t reflect real life.” The ad also aimed to raise awareness about domestic violence, a fact the brand says has been overshadowed by the controversy.
Public Divide
Celebrities have weighed in, with Doja Cat mocking the ad on TikTok, criticizing its glorification of traditional beauty ideals. Meanwhile, TV host Megyn Kelly defended Sweeney, dismissing the backlash as “lunacy” and arguing the focus was wrongly shifted from the campaign’s message.
