Selena Gomez has once again found herself in the spotlight over public scrutiny about her appearance and weight fluctuations. Recently, the 32-year-old singer and actress addressed rumors of undergoing plastic surgery while responding to a TikTok video originally posted by a physician’s assistant from a plastic surgeon’s office. The video, shared back in 2023, speculated about Gomez’s changing looks, prompting her to comment on July 27, 2024.
In her response, Selena expressed her frustration: “Honestly, I hate this. I was on stripes because of flare up. I have Botox. That’s it. Leave me alone.” The “Only Murders in the Building” star’s candid remark highlights her ongoing struggle with lupus, an autoimmune disease she was diagnosed with in 2014. Lupus can cause various symptoms, including joint pain and flare-ups that can affect physical appearance.
Following Selena’s outburst, the TikToker, Marissa Barrionuevo, posted an apology note: “You don’t owe it to anyone to tell us why you don’t look the same as what you did when you were a teenager or in your 20s.” Selena responded graciously, sending love and warmth, and adding, “I love you. Not about you. I just get sad sometimes.”
Selena’s health challenges have been well-documented. In 2017, she underwent a kidney transplant as a consequence of her lupus diagnosis. Though she has not publicly disclosed the specific medications she takes, in January, she addressed fan concerns via TikTok, saying, “I shake because of my medication of lupus.” Despite her transparency, she continues to face criticism regarding her appearance.
To combat the negativity, Selena has used her platform to promote body positivity. She often shares messages reminding her fans and herself of self-acceptance. For instance, she posted, “Today I realised I’ll never look like this again,” and another time, she said, “I’m not perfect but I am proud to be who I am—sometimes I forget it’s ok to be me.”
Selena’s openness about her health and body image struggles resonates with many, serving as a powerful reminder of the importance of empathy and respect towards individuals dealing with chronic illnesses and the impact these conditions can have on their lives.
