Is this the end? Superboys Of Malegaon’s dismal day 6 performance raises concerns

Superboys of Malegaon, directed by Reema Kagti and produced by Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, and Ritesh Sidhwani, has had a lackluster performance at the box office since its release. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024 to a standing ovation, has failed to make a significant impact in theaters. With just Rs 2.5 crore net earned in the first five days, the film has been struggling against fierce competition, particularly from the thriller Crazxy. On its sixth day, the movie saw a 5-10 percent drop in earnings, earning just Rs 25 lakh on its fifth day.

Starring Adarsh Gourav, Vineet Kumar, and Shashank Arora, Superboys of Malegaon focuses on the journey of Nasir Shaikh, an amateur filmmaker from Malegaon. Despite the strong performances and the movie’s unique slice-of-life narrative, it has failed to create a strong presence at the box office, especially in the face of the successful Chhaava.

Strategic Move Toward OTT

Though Superboys of Malegaon has struggled at the box office, the makers are strategically positioning the film for success through its OTT release. The movie is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video once it wraps up its theatrical run, capitalizing on the non-theatrical revenue to recover its costs. This marketing strategy, along with the film’s festival acclaim, may ensure that Superboys of Malegaon finds its audience in the digital space, where it could attract more viewers who missed its theatrical run.

Looking Ahead

While Superboys of Malegaon is unlikely to see a box office resurgence, its future on streaming platforms could offer it a second wind. As its theatrical run nears its end, the film is already being marketed for its Amazon Prime Video debut.
