Mohanlal Magic! L2 Empuraan mints Rs 22 Crore on Day 1, sets new benchmark for Malayalam cinema

L2: Empuraan, the much-awaited sequel to the 2019 action-thriller Lucifer, released on Thursday, March 27, and performed solidly at the box office in its opening outing. Featuring Malayalam film legend Mohanlal, the movie received a phenomenal opening day, grossing ₹22 crores, according to industry monitor Sacnilk.

Strong Box Office Performance

On the day of its release, L2: Empuraan saw a robust 61.02 percent occupancy in Malayalam theaters. The morning shows were great with a 63.32 percent occupancy, and the afternoon shows saw a 54.32 percent audience. The evening shows saw 60.43 percent occupancy, but it was the night shows that saw maximum attendance at 66 percent. This is a great performance, which indicates a huge fan base and expectation for the movie.

Critical Acclaim and Record-Breaking Opening

Trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh congratulated the historic opening of the film, citing housefull shows in prominent Kerala cities like Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, and Kozhikode. Adarsh reported on X (formerly Twitter) that L2: Empuraan had “taken a record-breaking start” and was likely to “rewrite opening-day records,” a big milestone for the Malayalam film industry.

Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, L2: Empuraan boasts a talented cast, which includes Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier, and Sachin Khedekar, among others. The movie’s storyline moves very quickly between timelines and settings, and it is a fast-paced movie. Prithviraj Sukumaran, who also acts in the movie, highlighted the need to keep the visual coherence while handling the complicated storylines in order to hold the audience.

Directed by Aashirvad Cinemas, Sree Gokulam Movies, and Lyca Productions, L2: Empuraan is set to make a big mark in the Malayalam film market.
