Netflix has added another unusual thriller to its growing list of original films, and The Last House is already getting plenty of attention. Released on August 7, the science fiction horror thriller has quickly become a talking point because of its unusual story, strong cast and creative promotional campaign. Directed by Louis Leterrier, the film stars Greta Lee and Wagner Moura as a couple who suddenly find themselves trapped inside their own home with their children. What begins as a normal day quickly turns into a terrifying fight for survival.
The story follows Jason and Ann and their two children as their house suddenly becomes impossible to escape from. The family discovers that their doors and windows cannot be opened or broken, leaving them completely cut off from the outside world. Their communication also stops working, making it impossible for them to understand what has happened or ask anyone for help. As they try to find answers, they begin to realize that something strange is happening outside their home.
One of the biggest mysteries in The Last House is a strange rain that appears to be connected to the family’s situation. The weather event is not simply an ordinary storm. It seems to be part of the mysterious force that is keeping people inside their homes. Things become even more frightening when strange creatures appear during the rain. As the family learns more about what is happening, they realize that leaving the house could be far more dangerous than staying inside.
The family also has to deal with a very basic problem. Their food and other supplies are slowly running out. With no clear way to escape, Jason and Ann must protect their children while trying to understand the force that has trapped them. The story combines survival, mystery and horror, creating a tense situation where the family has nowhere to run.
Greta Lee plays Ann, while Wagner Moura stars as Jason. Lee is known for her acclaimed performance in Past Lives, while Moura has appeared in popular projects including Narcos and Civil War. The cast also includes Riley Chung, Emma Ho, Noah Alexander Sosnowski and Gabriel Barbosa.
The film is directed by Louis Leterrier, whose previous work includes The Incredible Hulk, Now You See Me and Fast X. Matthew Robinson has written the screenplay. The Last House has been produced by Louis Leterrier, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and Kori Adelson, with Chernin Entertainment and 3 Arts Entertainment involved in the production and Netflix handling its release. The movie has a runtime of around 1 hour and 50 minutes.
Adding to the attention around the film was Netflix’s unusual promotional stunt. The streaming platform reportedly placed a man inside a functioning house themed billboard above Sunset Boulevard, copying the movie’s central idea of someone being trapped inside a home. The unusual campaign quickly attracted attention and gave viewers another reason to talk about The Last House.
