Rajkumar Hirani reveals the exact release date of SANJU teaser

0

Acclaimed filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, who is busy with the post-production of his upcoming film SANJU, featuring actor Ranbir Kapoor, has confirmed that the film's teaser will be released on Tuesday morning.

Refuting news of its release during an IPL match on April 24, Hirani said: "It is not a correct news that it is going to be released during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match. As far as I understand, we are launching the teaser before that.

"It will be in the morning of April 24. In the evening, it will be shown during the IPL match."

Hirani said this while interacting with the media on Friday, along with Subhash Ghai at the 5th Veda Session organised by Whistling Woods International Film Institute.

There were reports earlier that Hirani would release the first look of the biopic on Sanjay Dutt before the April 24 IPL clash and a teaser would be shown in the presence of Ranbir and Sanjay on the Cricket Live show on Star Sports.

When asked whether SANJU would help to re-establish Ranbir again, the 3 IDIOTS and PK director said: "He was always a Superstar. He never went away.

"He is fantastic actor and I really enjoyed working with him and in future, I would love to work with him again on a film."

Talking about the need of more film institutes in India, on the lines of Whistling Woods Institute, Hirani said: "I think we need more number of film institute's as we have very less.

"There are channels, we are making so many films in a year. We are the largest producer of films in the world. There are television shows and now there is the digital platform as well, so, for all that, we need good technicians.

"I feel Subhash Ghai is doing a commendable work through his Whistling Woods Institute by imparting knowledge to film students. My son also studies here so it is inspiring to see the kind of work happening here."

SANJU is a biographical drama, written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The film is based on the life of actor Sanjay Dutt, with Ranbir Kapoor portraying the role.

SANJU is set to be released on June 29.

This is what ASCHARYA F#*KIT director has to say about CBFC

ASCHARYA F#*K IT — as the name suggests, is a bold film. But its director Samit Kakkad has "immense faith" in Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which has often locked horns with filmmakers over cuts and beeps. He is sure that the censor board will see the film, which is inspired from the works of controversial writer Saadat Hasan Manto, for what it is and hopefully value artistic expression.

The film, backed by Yoodlee films, Saregama India's movie production venture, is a concoction of suspense, action and erotica.

"It is (a bold film). But then does that mean in the fear of censorship, filmmakers should restrict stories that they want to tell? The reality is that Manto was a controversial writer, so while making a film based on his characters or style, I have to remain true to it as a filmmaker," Kakkad told IANS in an email interview.

"MANTO wrote about characters on the fringes of society and captured their world and their voice. I have immense faith in the CBFC system and I am sure they will see the film for what it is and hopefully value artistic expression."

The team shot in a brothel and had a sex worker on set to help the cast with the language, diction and mannerism for the movie that revolves around the lives of a prostitute, her pimp who loves her, a Bollywood superstar and his driver.

"Many of my characters' elements are inspired from bits and bobs of real life. The idea for me to choose the characters I did, was to show the intertwining nexus that exists and the stark differences of the lives. The glamour contrasted with the life of a sex worker contrasted with the life of a chauffeur," said Kakkad.

It has a Bollywood superstar as a character but the cast does not have an actual Bollywood superstar. It stars actors Priyanka Bose, Vaibhav Raj Gupta, Ankit Raaj, Anangsha Biswas and Santosh Juvekar.

Otherwise also, there are hardly any Bollywood erotic films that have big names. Aren't they bold enough to do erotic films?

"I think it is unfair to say that major actors shy away from such roles. There have been actors who have taken up the challenge and delivered. In my case, I never took the film to a major actor for the male part because I wanted a sense of realism with my characters and with a star, sometimes the persona ends up being bigger than the character," said the "Half Ticket" director.

Quite a few films are inspired by books or literary work. Is Bollywood running out of original stories?

"Hardly. I think the role of cinema is to dish out content that initiates some sort of an emotion, whatever it may be. Sometimes literary works provide just that and it's a challenge and equally exciting to try and do justice to the written word," he said.

As a filmmaker, he wants to continue to "push myself and continue making films that are exciting for me at first and then everyone else around me".

Ranbir Kapoor: We have to change notion of masculinity

0

Actor Ranbir Kapoor has said the notion of masculinity has to be changed to empower women.

Ranbir said this on Thursday while interacting with the media along with Deepika Padukone, Shabana Azmi, and Manish Malhotra.

Ranbir and Deepika walked the ramp for designer Manish Malhotra, in an event organised by Shabana Azmi's Mijwan Welfare Society.

On asking his idea of empowering the women of the country and securing equal rights for them, Ranbir said: "I think firstly, we have to change the notion of masculinity."

"I think the idea which we have in our mind about masculinity… if we could change the feeling of entitlement then that's the big thing," he said.

"Once we do that, we should provide a platform to encourage citizen of our country, especially to girls and the women. It will then be a great start and I think Mijwan Welfare Society is just about that," Ranbir added.

Speaking on his experience of walking the ramp with his co-actor and ex-girlfriend Deepika Padukone after so long, Ranbir said: "I think the biggest thing is we have come together to walk for Mijwan Welfare Society. That is the bigger picture here so it's always wonderful to walk for Manish with Deepika and for Shabana aunty and everybody concerned with Mijwan Welfare Society."

When Deepika was asked regarding her experience of walking the ramp with Ranbir, she said: "It's very exciting. This is for the first time I am walking the ramp for the Mijwan fashion show. I started off my career as a model. I walked the ramp many times but this was special. It felt genuine, real and connected."

"I feel everyone behind the scenes has worked really hard in doing what they do. Not just putting the show together but you can see the work, effort, and craftsmanship," said Deepika.

The PADMAAVAT actress also said it gives her real joy to see the Mijwan group doing so much to empower women and children.

"I think most importantly, the fact that they have empowered so many women and children give me so much joy and it's inspiring to see the work they do," added Deepika.

Ranbir will be seen next in the biopic of actor Sanjay Dutt titled SANJU, directed by Raj Kumar Hirani, and in BRAHMASTRA which is directed by Ayan Mukherji.

NANU KI JAANU Movie Review: If you want to talk then talk, don,t drive

0

A beauty drives a scooty in the early mornings of Delhi.. a ‘thug’ of ‘real estateistan’ takes the law in his hands by answering a call from his ‘maa’ while driving in this cinema of doom… The result is – the beauty on the scooty meets with an accident, leaving those aloo parathas without dahi, the thug of ‘real estateistan’ in a tizzy as he struggles to figure out what is ‘galat’ (wrong) and what is ‘sahi’ (right).

Should someone talk while driving?. Is it advisable for a slim and beautiful lady to have aloo paratha in such torrid heat as breakfast?. What made Abhay Deol sign this?. Was the reunion of Abhay Deol with Manu Rishi Chadha, who displayed his brilliance while penning the dialogues of Abhay Deol’s OYE LUCKY LUCY OYE just a gimmick?. Instead of keeping the promise shown by Indian horror/comedies like – BHOOT BANGLA, MUNI SERIES, GO GOA GONE, DARLING, PRETHAM and of course BHOOL BHULAIYA (CHANDRAMUKHI) and find new dope of hope why go overboard and churn this dokedukhi (head ache)? NANU KI JAANU frequently asks all these questions; while some get answered the important ones remain a mystery in this ‘khichdi’ (mix) of genres.

NANU KI JAANU helmed by Faraz Haider (War Chod Na Yaar previous) unites with actor Abhay Deol and writer/actor Manu Rishi Chadha along with the Tamil writer director Myshkin who made the acclaimed PISAASU (2014) to adapt the unique Tamil paranormal thriller into Bollywood.

Human beings are strange species really; the director and writers of this flick prove the inconsistency of the human mind convincingly. A mind which can think like an Einstein and pop up with a cracker of an idea like this one – a quirky genre of a horror parody/spoof strangely while executing goes juvenile and spells doom.

Nanu (Abhay Deol) is a real estate gangster who operates in Noida. His team of 4 gangsters includes his best friend Dabbu (Manu Rishi Chadha), a lady by the name Promilla (Reshma Khan) who threatens the target with false case of molestation if they don,t sign the agreement in favor of Nanu. After cracking a deal, the ‘thugs of real estateistan’ are making merry, Nanu is on a drinking spree, after partying all night, Nanu while returning home gets a call from his Mom ( played by Himani Shivpuri). As he answers the call, he hears a commotion behind and finds Seedhi ( Patralekhaa) lying in a pool of blood. Nanu rushes Siddhi to the hospital with the help of a halwai (cook). But it’s too late, Siddhi passes away holding Nanu’s hand and leaving her locket. The ‘thug of real estateistan’ is now traumatized by the incident. Nanu loses his swag, dare devilry and bhaigiri (that gangster wala attitude), he goes sober and develops kindness towards people. Strange things start happening at Nanu’s apartment and without disclosing what happens further in our sincere attempt to avoid being labeled as spoilers, we only add that Nanu feels some supernatural presence in his house that later turns surreal as the movie in its eagerness to deliver a message on safe driving, domestic violence, and more..

The movie starts as a quirky comedy then turns into a horror parody/spoof/comedy then enters the paranormal zone for a while and then winks at dark comedy genre then tries to tease by entering the stoner genre and ends nowhere.

It’s not that NANU KI JAANU is a complete disaster, it has its sly moments and the idea is undoubtedly a cracker but the director Faraz Haider and the writer Manu Rishi Chadha fail to go beyond some funny moments and mould it into a compete film. It’s hilarious in couple of patches. It’s rare to find a filmmaker having his observations about the prevailing situations in the world and politics and it’s extremely difficult to convey the feeling in a playful manner. Faraz Haider has that ability but he lacks consistency and the required professional sheen and needs to brush his skills to create that hook in such genres.

After thinking out of the box, Faraz Haider has the ability to convince some fine acting talents to feature in his projects. Rajesh Sharma, Brijendra Kala and Manu Rishi Chadha all excel in their roles. In fact Manu Rishi Chadha provides the most enjoyable moments with his impeccable comic timing and quirky innocence.

However Abhay Deol is a misfit as the commander of this ‘gangs of real estateistan’ and when he romances the ‘ghost’ you don,t know whom to give ‘dosh’ (blame). The beautiful Patralekhaa is hardly there. Himani Shivpuri is eaqrnest. Technicalities are fine.

We know it’s advisable to wear helmets while driving your bike and or scooty, the irony is that NANU KI JAANU by Faraz Haider starring Abhay Deol and Patralekhaa supports the cause in its weird mix of ghost comedy meeting a rom com in a quirky supernatural way, fails to follow the traffic (read genre) rules and changes lanes in its overenthusiastically genuine thoughts that are ‘doomed’ by a juvenile execution.
