MERCURY Movie Review: Daringly spine chilling

0

When a new age filmmaker like Karthik Subbaraj ( PIZZA, JIGARTHANDA) collaborates with a dance sensation like Prabhu Deva, the environment gets ‘warmed’ up to a different level.

MERCURY starring Prabhu Deva in lead is a spine chillingly daring protest on the woes of industrialization/corporatization/global warming/ pollution told without spoken words but with a bleeding heart.

Karthik Subbaraj after the haunted house horror thriller PIZZA and the gangster flick-turned-comedy caper JIGARTHANDA changes gear once again and maintains his repute as a thinking mainstream filmmaker. A picturesque location in a southern valley is a resort for a group of five youngsters. The hill station is a witness of a devastating act of corporatization/global warming where greed has taken over the need. A company by the name ‘Global Earth’ has created havoc by emitting poisonous mercury resulting in deaths and serious casualties. One night in their ‘ high’ of enjoyment, the group of five youngsters encounter a local – played by Prabhudeva and things take horrific turns. (Revealing much will act as spoilers). The five youngsters and Prabhudeva end up in that chemical plant – Global Earth and all hell breaks loose.

The jeremiad on global warming is getting more and more frightening every day, Hollywood documentaries like AN INCONVINIENT TRUTH, CHASING ICE, CLIMATE REFUGEES etc had added chorus to the complain with an echo. Recently we had Nila Madhab Panda’s social drama with sarcastic dark tones in KADVI HAWA that saw Sanjay Mishra in a stunning portrayal. The talented Karthik Subbaraj’s MERCURY is an intoxicating mix of a teen horror with some slasher elements and melancholy/woe/aghast of chemical poisoning. Karthik Subbaraj is daringly ambitious; he goes silent in making his voice heard and gain attention.

MERCURY takes time to instigate the feeling of submergence in this silent horror that gives a flashing déjà vu of classics in the genre like FRANKESTIEN (1910) NOSFERATU (1922), or THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925) etc. The problem starts when the known elements and gimmicks take over for sometime but thankfully as the unraveling takes place things come back to shape in this technical marvel where Cinematographer S. Tirru’s camera moves along with the scares in those toxic green hue. The sound design by Kunal Rajan and background score by Santosh Narayanan is terrific in this silent horror.

Unfortunately, call it bad timing or whatever, MERCURY for a while enters into the zone of John Krasinski’s modern cult A QUIET PLACE when the mayhem in the factory takes place but eventually it distinguishes itself and has a couple of terrific stand alone moments like Prabhu Deva’s fingers dancing on the edges of the rustic metal inside the factory where a bloody battle of survival is on. The dancing figures are matching their steps with an intriguing piano interlude in the background, now that’s giving a crude scary scenario a lyrical feel without any complaints. Brilliant.

Prabhu Deva is fabulous in a role that is challenging and puts him completely out from his comfort zone and the choreographer-turned-actor-turned-director is competent. The five youngsters Sananth Reddy, Deepak Paramesh, Anish Padman, Shashank and Remya Nambeesan deliver as per the demands of the helmer.

Pertinent question like what happened at corporate earth that lead to the horrifying toxic disaster is left unanswered and the movie takes its time to intoxicate its target audience but overall MERCURY delivers the thrill and dares to be different in telling us about the horror of industrialization/corporatization/global warming/ pollution through a horror that haunts back with a probing chorus on this Friday the 13th !

OCTOBER Movie Review:Varun Dhawan excels in a heartfelt allegory of love

0

Sirf Ehasaas Hai Ye Ruuh Se Mahasuus Karo, Pyaar Ko Pyaar Hi Rahane Do Koi Naam Na Do (this is an experience, savour in your soul, let love be love, don’t give it any other name). Nobody would have imagined that this line from the gem ‘Humne dekhi hai’ penned by Gulzar and sung by Lata Mangeshkar in KHAMOSHI (1970) would be the crux of the movie OCTOBER that reunites refined talents like writer Juhi Chaturvedi, director Shoojit Sircar and the heartthrob Varun Dhawan in this heartfelt allegory of love that is beautiful like a jasmine flower (Nyctanthes arbor-tristis) and cool like the season of October.

Said to be a story about love, not a love story, Shoojit Sircar, Juhi Chaturvedi and Varun Dhawan in OCTOBER dare to turn the tables and play out from their comfort zone. The quirky, sly humour we experienced in VICKY DONOR, PIKU is absent in this lyrical love story that defies the routine mush and candy floss in a simple heartfelt coming of age saga that demands patience from the concern audience.

Dan (Varun Dhawan), a student of hotel management is an intern at a top hotel in Delhi. Dan is a clumsy, careless but a lovable cookie. His colleague Shiuli ((Banita Sandhu) is a focused and caring. One night an incident changes the life of Shiuli and Dan and the movie takes a lyrically soothing turn where Dan experiences the meaning of love, care, responsibility, humanity and more. Shoojit Sircar takes his own sweet time in making his target audience sway with the allegory; it’s simple, heartfelt and spirited though it’s leisurely in its journey.

Varun Dhawan sheds his popular image of an entertainer and delivers a nuanced performance as Dan. It will be debatable whether BADLAPUR or OCTOBER is his best till date as an actor. He is controlled, rightly subtle and piously into the skin of Dan in this song less story about love.

For the general audience, OCTOBER will be a test of patience and too human in this practical world. It will be even difficult for the audience who love rom com to understand the reason behind Dan emotions and Shiuli’s reactions as they don,t say the golden words. Are they in love..? will be the question that will keep on lingering in their heads. OCTOBER is beautiful and poetic but it’s strictly for the eclectic who savor poetry, the entertainment hungry souls may even doze off.

Shoojit Sircar narrates the story piously; the biggest achievement in OCTOBER is the helmer’s brilliant quality to say more with fewer words in this coming of age saga. As Dan discovers his feelings towards Shiuli, he comes to terms with his equation with his boss, friends, mom, especially with Shiuli’s mom and life in general. All depicted in simple day to day events.

The movie looks beautiful thanks to Avik Mukhopadhyay’s eye candy camera work, whether it’s the opening sequence of a metro steering into its destination amidst the Delhi fog, the autumn greenery, everything is picturesque like a postcard though majority of the movie is shot indoors in a hospital but whenever the camera peeps outside, it breezes with fresh life.

OCTOBER would not have been soul stirring without the music of Shantanu Moitra which is pleasing, soothing and heartfelt reminder of the great sound of violin. The essence of Jasmine flower ((Nyctanthes arbor-tristis) – Shiuli in Bengali also known as the ‘tree of sorrow’ is rightly felt. The name of the female protagonist is Shiuli. The night blooming jasmines are quite popular for their characteristic scent and they bloom most prominently from July through October.(If anyone was wondering the comig of OCTOBER in this summer? – this seems to be the seed of thought for the innovative title).

Banita Sandhu as Shiuli gives an earnest performance, Gitanjali Rao as Shiuli’s mom is fantastic.

OCTOBER is an experiment which is more important to Varun Dhawan then anyone else. The entertainer who has never given a flop in his six year old career has featured in love stories playing to the gallery with aplomb. Will his portrayal in OCTOBER bring the desired ‘cool’ quotient in this scorching heat to his fandom? That need to be seen but in any case, Varun deserves a pat on his back for completing surrendering to Shoojit Sircar’s vision and Juhi Chaturvedi’s allegory of love. He did it in BADLAPUR in 2015 but a lot has happened since then.

But for those who think beyond box office figures and clichés for entertainment, OCTOBER is an emotional, lyrical and beautiful indulgence if you savor poetry and have the patience. As we know true love demands patience, so does OCTOBER. Going with 3.5 stars (an extra for the undeniably adorable Varun Dhawan).

Ishaan Khatter’s happy fateful coincidence will leave you in awe

Ishaan Khatter says it was a happy fateful coincidence to get to dance on Prabhudheva's Muqabala song in his debut film BEYOND THE CLOUDS.

As part of a scene in the Majid Majidi directorial, Ishaan's character Amir is supposed to turn on a song and dance to it.

In the sequence, Ishaan is seen freestyling to the original track, but in a shadow.

"I have to admit that this was a very happy fateful coincidence for me. While shooting the scene, Mr Majidi asked me to play any song I felt like at the time that would help elevate the moment," Ishaan said in a statement.

"When I hit play button on my music player, 'Muqabala' started. He absolutely loved it and asked me to take my shot and it all just magically happened. This song is in no way a new rendition or version of the song. It is very much the killer original track," added Ishaan, who is Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor's younger brother.

BEYOND THE CLOUDS is Iranian filmmaker Majidi's maiden India-set project.

The film narrates a heart-warming tale of a brother and sister, and how they find happiness in separation and turbulent times. It also celebrates the triumph and adoration of life against a Mumbai backdrop. Produced by Zee Studios and Namah Pictures, the film is set to release globally including India on April 20.

That is what Cannes Film Festival is.

0

70 years of refinement in the art of organizing an International Film Festival. That is what Cannes Film Festival is.

The appointment of Jury Presidents, selection of films in official sections and sidebar events, the events surrounding the festival, like master classes – the very announcements have an unfailing rhythm that the long time participants of the festival never miss. They all know with certainty what to expect when till it leads to the opening of the Festival itself.

Official selections, read, for the all-important Competition, out of Competition and Uncertain Regard, will be announced tomorrow at 11 A.M. Paris time. But, like a trailer, Cannes unveiled today the list of short films which will compete for Palm d’Or in that category.

Eight films from France, Philippines, USA, Iran, Poland, Japan, China and Australia have been selected from out of 3943 entries. So, that is the scale of selection. The award winner from these eight films will be announced on the 19th of May, 2018 by the Jury headed by the French filmmaker Bertrand Bonello. This Jury will also select the award winners from the Cinefondation Selections, a selection from films submitted by film schools from all over the world.

“The Cinéfondation Selection has chosen 17 films this year (14 live-action and 3 animated films), from among the 2,426 submitted by film schools all over the world. Fourteen countries on four continents will be represented. Twelve of the twenty-two directors selected for this program are women.

“The jury will hand over the three Cinéfondation prizes at a ceremony preceding the screening of the awarded films on Thursday 17th May, in the Buñuel Theatre”.

What do we expect from these young, unknown film makers of the future? Bertrand Bonello beautifully observed, “Let them shake us up, let them make us look at what we are unable to see, let them enjoy the freedom, the sharpness, the recklessness and the daring that we sometimes no longer possess…”

Neither look for any Indian connection in these selections nor fret over its non-presence.
