Narendra Jha: A talent that remained divorced from stardom

0

The last dialogue we ever heard Narendra say on-screen was: "Life is unpredictable. Who knows about the next Friday?"

He sad this in 2016 – THE END, which released towards the end of last year.

Narendra was a fabulous actor and always reminded me that I never did anything about it. Apart from mentioning him in my film reviews, I never got down to actually praising Narendra. This is one devil who never got his due. We were too busy chasing stars.

Actor Narendra Jha, 55, died early on Wednesday following a heart attack.

It is ironical that Narendra died on Aamir Khan's birthday. Aamir is everything that Narendra could have been if only success had smiled down on him.

But Narendra remained divorced from stardom despite polished performances in Rahul Dholakia's RAEES, Sanjay Gupta's KAABIL and most notably Vishal Bhardwaj's HAIDER where his role as Tabu's suspected terrorist-husband was the best thing about the film.

"Yes! But what good is it to say this to me if you don't write about it," Narendra once said again reminding me of the chasm that existed between critical perception and public acknowledgement.

Last year, Narendra was part of both the Republic Day releases RAEES and KAABIL — and he was equally engaging in both. We were too busy writing on the clash between Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan.

Reacting to Narendra's sudden demise, Dholakia said: "Very sad, shocking! Too young, a very strong personality. Had fun shooting with him in RAEES. He was very involved in his character and was also very appreciated for his role as Musabhai."

Rakesh Roshan, who produced KAABIL, said: "He was not only a very fine actor but also a dignified human being. Quiet, restrained and graceful… Shocked to know he is no more."

One of Narendra's last appearances was in 2016 – THE END, an ominously titled film. Its director Jaideep Chopra can't believe Narendra is gone.

"In the climax of my film, he had to say a dialogue, ‘Aaiye aaj mein jeena shuru karte hain, pataa nahi yeh duniya kab khatam ho jaye, ho sakta hai yeh aapki aakhri film ho ya meri, next Friday ka kya bharosa aaye ya na aaye.'

"Narendra didn't want to say these lines. But I pushed him to say that dialogue. He was worried ki ‘kabhi kabhi Saraswati hoti hai zubaan par'. Who was to know my film 2016 – THE END would be his last release?"

OMERTA director Hansal Mehta: Want to leave viewers with sense of hate

0

OMERTA director Hansal Mehta, who unveiled the gritty trailer of the film here on Wednesday, says his idea behind making an uncomfortable film is to make the audience face the truth.

The film, starring Rajkummar Rao, is based on British-Pakistani terrorist Omar Saeed Sheikh. Its trailer was launched here at an event.

Mehta said: "OMERTA takes a look at this complex paradox of a man called Omar Saeed Sheikh. It was a difficult subject to choose and a challenge to make.

"However, with an actor like Rajkummar, no challenge seems insurmountable and this was the ideal film to hurtle us out of our comfort zone to make something that is uncomfortable.

"But that is the burden of truth – it is uncomfortable and it must be faced."

According to Mehta, OMERTA looks at what it means to be a fundamentalist and for someone to pick up a gun with the intent of killing in return for an afterlife in paradise.

"I want to leave the viewer with a sense of awe, disgust, hate, surprise and let them examine the ramifications of these events on their lives today," he added.

The National Award winning Rajkummar, who has delivered impactful performances in his past associations with Mehta, plays an anti-hero in the movie for the first time.

"OMERTA is among the most researched films that I have worked on till date. We actually visited some of the places frequented by Omar in London during his transformation from a LSE graduation student to becoming this deadly terrorist.

"I needed to feel and touch this man's past – to ingest him. It was not an easy journey for me to take. With OMERTA and Hansal sir, we have a combination that will probably leave you stunned. There will be this moment of shock and silence as the end credits roll," he said.

The film is shot in real locations across London and India while recreating Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Presented by Swiss Entertainment and Karma Media, and produced by Nahid Khan, the film is releasing on April 20.

Aamir Khan: Amitabh Bachchan is better now, coping well

0

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, who turned 53 on Wednesday, said his THUGS OF HINDOSTAN co-star Amitabh Bachchan's health is better now and he is back to shooting.

The actors have been shooting for the movie in Jodhpur.

"I shot with Amitji last night itself. It's true that he has pain in the shoulder and back. But this film also has a lot of action scenes for him. I think it is after a lot of years that you will see Amitji doing a lot of action. So, it's definitely a challenging film for him and he is coping very well with it," Aamir told the media here.

"He has had a shoulder and back injury. The pain had got aggravated day before, but he is better now," he added.

Aamir, who is in Mumbai just for a day for his birthday, celebrated his special day with mediapersons.

The actor hopes THUGS OF HINDOSTAN reflects the hard work being put in.

"I hope the work we are doing on THUGS OF HINDOSTAN is good and people really like it. I want that the film that I am working in with Amitji is memorable. This is my expectation from the film," he said.
