KUCHH BHEEGE ALFAAZ Movie Review:- This social media inspired rom-com lacks the required emoji

0

A leucoderma affected girl enters a café to meet her blind date. The immortal ‘Tum aa gaye ho, noor aa gaya hai’ plays in the background. A popular RJ who has just delivered lines inspired from Faiz Ahmad Faiz poetry prefers to be within himself. He likes the company of a stray dog. Dog – the world’s most faithful animal are having a blast this Friday.

Anyways, A leucoderma affected girl but full of life who goes on blind dates with guys who don’t post their profile pictures, a popular RJ who prefers to be recluse, the premise of Onir’s KUCHH BHEEGE ALFAAZ is unusual and is laced with poetic tones.

The inclusion of melodies like ‘Tum Aaa gaye ho’ , ‘Pehla Nasha’ gives it an unexpected nostalgic tweak but in spite of all the poetic touch and nostalgic feeling, the rom com fails to elevate itself with the healing call love. It has a mind, a body, a face, a voice but no soul.

In Kolkata, a night radio jockey RJ Alfaaz (debutant Zain Khan Durrani) accidently receives a call from a social media creative professional Archana (Geetanjali Thapa). Archana is already in awe of RJ Alfaaz’s voice and shayari. They chat, exchange emoji’s, but what makes you wonder is why Archana is not able to recognize the voice of her favourite RJ when she talks to him on phone. Anyways, Onir tries to create two different worlds in KUCHH BHEEGE ALFAAZ, the one of RJ Alfaaz is poetic, aloof with a hidden remorse. The world of Archana is free willing, occupied with the current world of social media and WhatsApp forwards.

Artistic anonymity, the philosophy of a joker, the ubiquity of social media forwards all pop up but it doesn’t support the core narrative. Interesting characters like the lonely aged shopkeeper, the new team member in Archana’s office who had a terrible date with Archana before, Archana’s boss does differentiate this rom com from the usual ones. A cliché jealous friend of Archana, Apu Khandelwal (Shray Rai Tiwari) is also there to make the balance. Apu is the typical boy who is more interested in making Archana his girlfriend rather than remaining friends forever.

In between a sequence similar to fairy tales pops up. A school girl (Shefali Chauhan) in Shimla and the image of an elderly man played by Barun Chanda (Sonakshi Sinha’s father in LOOTERA) flashes the screen. The connection in the end is sad and unfortunately adds more melancholy to the audience who are coping with the failed intimacy between the lead Archana and Alfaaz. A couple of funny moments and the overall charm of Geetanjali Thapa is the silver lining. Zain Khan Durrani is decent while Shray Tiwari and Alfaaz’s colleague are realistic.

The movie captures Kolkata in its true essence, KUCHH BHEEGE ALFAAZ has words, poetry, moments, a subtle silence in its aura but it lacks the soul.

Aditi Rathore in new avatar in ‘Naamkarann’

Actress Aditi Rathore's character Avni has been shown dead in Naamkarann, but she is not walking out of the show. She says new characters, including hers, and stories will make the show even more interesting.

"Avni has completely finished herself. Her story in the past is over. She has stopped fighting back and has accepted things as they are. She is no longer aggressive. She tries to be happy but she is upset and misses her family but she doesn't want trouble for her family," Aditi told IANS from the set of the Star Plus show in Mumbai.

Revealing the reason behind her character getting killed off, the actress said: "Whosoever was in Avni's life is dead. She feels that Ayesha ma and Neela ma sacrificed their lives for her. Avni doesn't want something happening to her husband Neil. She doesn't want people like Vidyut to hurt her family again, so she chose to walk away from their lives."

Actresses Neena Gupta and Mrunmayee Lagoo, daughter of late actress Reema Lagoo who played an important role in the show, are expected to join its cast. Aditi was tight-lipped about her new castmates and developments in the show, which is taking a five-year leap but shared that her character will be called Nilanjana.

How is the leap going to help the show?

"When people see the same story and cast members, the audience gets bored. Now, there will be lots of new faces and stories. Avni has made herself disappear from her family's lives. What will be her destiny? The story will be more interesting," she promised.

"Whenever the show takes a leap, characters and story become interesting. So the audience will be entertained for sure," she added about "Naamkarann", which had earlier taken a 15-year leap.

Actor Daniel Craig, who has played secret agent James Bond in four films, will sell his personal Aston Martin numbered 007, at a Christie's auction in April.

"The bespoke, midnight-blue 2014 Centenary Edition Vanquish – numbered 007 – will be offered on 20 April in New York. Sale proceeds will benefit The Opportunity Network, which helps young people with career development," the auction house said in a statement, reported Efe.

The automobile, worth an estimated $400,000 to $600,000, is being sold under Christie's The Exceptional Sale, described by the auction house as "a highly selective, tightly curated auction of decorative arts masterpieces and significant cultural icons".

"This Aston Martin Vanquish is a tour de force of automobile engineering and a distinct pleasure to drive," Craig said.

"While I will miss it, I am keen to further the very important work of The Opportunity Network with its sale," he added.

Craig, 49, worked with Aston Martin's design chief to customise his personal vehicle.

The actor had made his debut as Agent 007 in CASINO ROYALE (2006) and also played the character created by Ian Fleming in QUANTUM OF SOLACE (2008), SKYFALL (2012) and SPECTRE (2015).

Last August, Craig ended months of speculation over who would star in the next film in the James Bond series, confirming he would return as Agent 007 in the next, yet-untitled instalment.

Zareen Khan: Trolls affect our family, friends

0

Actress Zareen Khan says she is glad that her mother is not on social media as she will get disturbed with the way she (Zareen) gets trolled.

"Trolls don't realise that whatever they write not only affects us but also affects our family and friends. I am very thankful for the fact that my mother is not on social media because such bad and abusive comments would definitely disturb her," Zareen said in a statement.

Zareen has been a victim of trolls on social media platforms. She approached MTV to be a part of their new show "MTV Troll Police" after watching an episode with actress Taapsee Pannu.

"I have seen Taapsee's 'MTV Troll Police' episode. I feel this is a great initiative and a great thing that MTV has come up with to help people who are targeted without any reason. There is a certain section of people in our society who hide behind the anonymity of Internet and troll people like me," said Zareen, who made her Bollywood debut with VEER.

"Such kind of people are a threat to either themselves or the entire society because they do not realise how their actions affect others. That's the reason I have come on 'MTV Troll Police'. I want to know if my biggest trolls have the courage to face me and say the same things on my face," she added.

On her biggest troll, she said: "I am surprised to see my biggest troll. He is just 23 years old. The world is his oyster now… He should concentrate on his life but instead what he is doing is criminal level trolling. I feel sorry for him."

She has a subtle warning for all trolls.

"In the world of social media no one can hide. The power of social media is so strong that you will be tracked."

AIYAARY Movie Review: WATAN KA BABLOO

0

WATAN KA BABLOO

The ‘common man’ khush nahi hua ‘Baby’ let’s meet again this coming ‘Wednesday’ what say.. (Spoiler alert : Babloo will be introduced in due course).

Neeraj Pandey’s latest AIYAARY touted as the espionage explosion aimed to expose the corruption in the Army, sadly ends up exposing the erstwhile prolific Neeraj Pandey’s shortcomings as a filmmaker in this thriller that is nothing but a ticking time bomb that has forgotten its ‘mission’ to explode and make the expected roar. Kya bore. We expected much more.. sob sob.

AIYAARY is a yawning result of a hangover of a cocktail made out of Pandey’s previous BABY and his first shot to fame A WEDNESDAY. The movie is non-involving, stretched and finally incomprehensible espionage drama. With the added casualty of assaulting the acting calibers of Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher and Adil Hussain by chopping it to just a couple of scenes, AIYYARY the touted tribute to the military and their families will hardly light a candle let alone a firecracker.

Neeraj Pandey opens AIYYARY as a spy thriller; A lady army officer is getting interrogated and is abruptly stopped when she is about to introduce Babloo. ((Spoiler alert : Babloo will be introduced in due course).  Abhay (Manoj Bajpayee) leader of a covert military espionage unit is absconding; Abhay is searching for his bright young and handsome protégé Jai (Sidharth Malhotra).  Jai has betrayed the army and has hotfooted to London with his girlfriend Sonia (Rakul Preet Singh).

Jai has access to hard discs containing valuable information. The protégé is a step ahead of his mentor. The covert military espionage unit is under threat to be disowned. Lot of ugly secrets highlighting the ugly sharks of corruption eating up the system is stored in the hard discs. Abhay has to find Jai, before it’s too late.

An ex-Army officer and arms dealer Gurinder (Kumud Mishra) has made an offer from his boss Mukul (Adil Hussain) to the army chief played by Vikram Gokhale. The honest army chief has refused the offer triggering the threat to the covert military espionage unit formed by the chief of the army. Who wins and how ugly, dirty and deadly is the demon of corruption prevailing in the system, who is the pawn and who is the king, who has betrayed and how. And who the hell is Babloo?. You get some answers while some are left alone to wander.

(Spoiler alert : Babloo will be introduced in due course).

Neeraj Pandey shows his incoherent incompetency here, AIYYARY is a classic case of overwhelming self indulgence to make something out of things that are considered to be the forte of the helmer – good looking men in uniform, a covert military unit, the plight of a common man, the enemy of the nation). The movie exceptionally throughout its 140 minutes duration is fascinated by its title – AIYAARY ( shifting shape, appearances, it’s also used for trickery). In a scene writer director Neeraj Pandey explains the meaning of the word to the audience. It’s nothing but a chest beating exercise in disguise to tell the audience that see I can come with such fascinating words. Before that scene, Neeraj Pandey in his baffled back to forth format – a flashback story, which in turn contains a couple of flashbacks and then a flashback within a flashback shows a scene where a brilliantly disguised Abhay (Manoj Bajpayee) waits for good dozen plus days to nab an informer who has double crossed. He nabs the informer, brings him to his camp, drinks with him and fulfills his last wish of having noodles before that the meaning of AIYAARY is explained to those who are not aware and shoots the informer. Why to turn into a Taratino or Scorse Mr. Pandey when you are good at being at your own.

Further, Neeraj in his zest to make AIYAARY an international espionage drama seems to get influenced by the MI series, Bourne films and all. Opps I forgot to remind. (Spoiler alert : Babloo will be introduced in due course).

AIYYARY also suffers from some unintentional humour – when Rakul Preet Singh gets the access to Sidharth Malhotra’s army id, she frowns and screams ‘who are you’. Girls die to date handsome men in uniform and she is shouting. Before that, in order to impress Sidharth Malhotra as a net expert sort of a hacker, the pretty Rakul Preet buys an outfit from the handsome Sidharth Malhotra’s card and no doubt the guy is impressed but we are not. We wonder why the hell a solid hacker is missing from this covert unit. Maybe to make way for the Telugu popular Rakul.. ok. (Spoiler alert : Babloo will be introduced in due course).

Wondering where the hell Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher had gone, its time for them to come. We wished it could have been in a much better way.. as the undeveloped cat and mouse game between Jai and Abhay ( why not Veeru, ‘coin’ toss inspiration was there?) fails to provide the expected thrills, Neeraj Pandey suddenly realizes that it isn,t working the way it should so to cover the first scam, the writer director introduces other scam and finally the much awaited ‘Babloo’ makes his entry finally.

Babloo is a poor dog and the hidden voice of the common man Baburao (Naseeruddin Shah) wags the dog ( Hoo Hoo).. bow bow the watchman Baburao shouts ‘scam’ which is in a way similar to the Adarsh Nagar Housing Society scandal in Mumbai. But what is the connection with that arms dealer, the cat and mouse game between a protégée and his mentor over here. Yes ‘corruption’ is the common thread but we are watching a thriller not a political drama.

What an irony, Neeraj Pandey took a long sequence to explain the meaning of AIYAARY and for this housing scam, he leaves things to our imagination. During the process, the dog gets his name Babloo.

(Spoiler alert ends : Babloo is introduced).

It’s the all round terrific performance of Manoj Bajpayee and the adorable screen presence of Sidharth Malhotra and his endearing act that makes you sit through AIYYARY. Less said about Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher and Adil Hussain is much better. Naseeruddin Shah gets an extended cameo and he will be good but we didn,t expected this sad revival of A WEDNESDAY in such a way. Rakul Preet Singh is beautiful and added just for glamour. Pooja Chopra on the contrary has something better for her in comparison.

Vikram Gokhale and Kumud Mishra chip in with valuable support, the talented Juhi Babbar is wasted as Manoj Bajpayee’s wife. Nivedita Bhattacharya as the media person is fine.

On technical front, shockingly action by Abbas Ali Moghu is spineless and remember it’s an espionage thriller. Sidharth Malhotra has not fired a single bullet in this film.    Praveen Kathikuloth’s editing leaves a lot to be desired. The movie is too stretched for the genre. Sudheer Palsane’s camera has done the maximum talking over here moving along and giving the feeling that things might move in the direction as expected. Sudheer Palsane gets full marks in at least creating such an impression for the whole 140 minutes with his camera. Production values are top notch.

Neeraj Pandey’s AIYYARY has a bold subject it could have been another talking point after A WEDNESDAY for him. Sadly, the touted espionage thriller that dares to take corruption in the army is nowhere near his directorial BABY or NAAM SHABANA for that matter in terms of thrill, chills and action. It’s also remote in its connection with the expectations and feelings of the ‘common man’.

A line in AIYAARY said by Naseeruddin Shah sums this all, he says, “garib admi ko ungli nahi karne ka’ this sounds similar in its theme to attract the eyeballs of the common man in A WEDNESDAY, which goes like “ I am just a stupid common man”. It seems Neeraj has taken the last line literally and ‘unglied’ (meddled) with the expectations of the common man ( the audience) in general regarding this  espionage thriller.
