Ever since Sundar C stepped away from directing Rajinikanth’s highly anticipated film Thalaivar 173, social media has been buzzing with speculation about who will take over the coveted project. Among the names circulating online, actor-director Dhanush has emerged as a strong contender. Though neither Dhanush nor Kamal Haasan’s production house has confirmed the news, fans are already building theories, hopeful that the acclaimed multi-hyphenate may helm the big-ticket entertainer.
A day earlier, Kamal Haasan officially confirmed that Sundar C would no longer be directing the film and that the team is actively scouting for a replacement. Speaking about the development, he said, “Sundar C has explained the reason for his withdrawal in his press release. I don’t have anything to add to it. As an investor, I want a script that my star likes. That is the healthy way to go about it.” He added that the team will continue searching for a story that satisfies Rajinikanth: “We are in the process of finalising a quality script.”
Although the real reason behind Sundar C’s exit remains unclear, industry chatter suggests creative differences may have played a role. In his official statement, Sundar expressed regret, saying, “It is with a heavy heart that I share some important news. Due to unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances, I have made the difficult decision to step back from the prestigious project, #Thalaivar173. Working with the legendary Superstar Rajinikanth and produced by Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan was a dream come true.”

Thalaivar 173, produced by Raaj Kamal International Films, will feature Rajinikanth in the lead and is expected to go on floors in 2026 after the superstar completes his existing commitments.
Meanwhile, Dhanush—who recently directed Idli Kadai and is awaiting the release of Tere Ishk Mein—has an impressive directorial lineup, including Pa Paandi (2017), Raayan (2024), and Nilavukku En Mel Ennadi Kobam (2025). If he is finalised as director, fans believe it would be a true “fanboy sambhavam.”
