The trailer of Kathanar has been released, giving viewers a first look at what the film has to offer. It is a period dark fantasy thriller that aims to present a different kind of cinematic experience. The trailer begins with a strong line, “An intricate web of illusion that astonishes everyone in ways no one can even imagine,” which sets the tone for what follows. It feels like an announcement before a big performance, building curiosity among viewers. A young boy in the crowd is shown watching with excitement, reflecting the kind of reaction the makers hope to create.
Kathanar introduces Jayasurya as Kathanar, shown as a protector who stands by people in difficult times. As the trailer moves forward, it also gives a glimpse of Anushka Shetty, who is making her Malayalam debut with this film. Her character appears to bring positivity and warmth to those around her.
The film is said to be based on the story of Kadamattathu Kathanar, a Christian priest believed to have lived in the 9th century and known in folklore for having special powers. However, the trailer suggests that this version of the story will be presented in a fresh and different way, unlike earlier adaptations.
The 178 second trailer introduces the setting of Kanthalloor Sala, which is described as an ancient centre of learning and is often compared to Nalanda in South India. A voice in the trailer says, “No matter what the forms or sources of the knowledge are, Kanthalloor Sala will welcome them with an open heart. However, I do not believe in sorcery or magic,” suggesting a logical and knowledge driven environment. Soon after, the tone changes as the trailer hints at the presence of dark forces, creating a sense of mystery and tension.
The film features a wide cast that includes Prabhudeva along with Sanoop San, Sandy, Devika, Niteesh Bharadwaj, Vineeth, Harish Uthaman, Srikanth Murali and Kulprit Yadav. The film is directed by Rojin Thomas, who has also worked on editing and visual effects direction, along with co writing the script with R Ramanand.
The technical team includes cinematographer Neil D Cunha, music composer Rahul Subrahmanian and production designer Rajeevan. The film is expected to release during the monsoon season this year.
Apart from Malayalam, Kathanar will also be released in multiple languages including English, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Chinese, French, Korean, Italian, Russian, Indonesian, Japanese and German. This wide release shows that the makers are aiming to reach audiences beyond regional boundaries.
