The trailer of Ishqnama, starring Shehnaaz Gill and Jai Randhawa, has finally been unveiled in Punjab, giving audiences a first look at an emotional love story inspired by real events. Directed by Arvvindr S. Khaira, the period romance is set to release worldwide on July 24, 2026, across India, Canada and the UK. The film also features Saurabh Sachdeva in a key role and promises a powerful mix of romance, emotions and history.
Inspired by the true story of Nimma and Naseema, Ishqnama is based on the popular book Hind Pak Bordernama. The story is set between 1981 and 1988 along the India Pakistan border in Punjab. It follows Nimma, a young Sikh poet from Indian Punjab, who falls in love with Naseema, a Muslim girl from Pakistani Punjab. Their relationship faces countless challenges as they try to keep their love alive despite the divide created by Partition and the border between the two nations.
What makes the film even more special is that it is inspired by real people. Nimma is still alive and lives in India, while Naseema is believed to have later settled in England. Efforts are currently being made to trace her, making this more than just a romantic film. It is a story that is deeply connected to real life and history.
The trailer showcases beautiful visuals, emotional performances and soulful music. It presents Ishqnama as a grand love story where love rises above religion, borders and fate. The film captures the pain of separation while celebrating hope, courage and the strength of true love.
Making his feature film directorial debut, Arvvindr S. Khaira said that after spending years telling emotional stories through music videos, he wanted to bring a story to the big screen that deserved a much larger canvas. He described Ishqnama as a heartfelt tribute to the unforgettable journey of Nimma and Naseema and said the trailer is only a glimpse of the hard work and passion that went into making the film.
Shehnaaz Gill called playing Naseema one of the most important experiences of her acting career. She shared that the role pushed her beyond her comfort zone and helped her grow as an artist. She said the film celebrates love as a powerful force that can overcome every obstacle and dedicated it to everyone who has ever been in love.
Jai Randhawa said launching the trailer in Punjab made the moment even more meaningful because of the love and support he has received from the people of the state throughout his career. He added that Ishqnama is much more than a love story as it explores sacrifice, hope and destiny, and he hopes audiences will connect with the film when it releases on July 24, 2026.
