Among all Indian films by the new age Indian filmmakers, it is Ritesh Batra’s THE LUNCH BOX (Critics’ Week) that has got a thumbs up while films like BOMBAY TALKIES (Special Screening) by Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar, Karan Johar, and Dibakar Banerjee, MONSOON SHOOTOUT (Midnight Screening) by Amit Kumar, and UGLY (Directors’ Fortnight) by Anurag Kashyap have disappointed the Cannes audience.

Some even have gone to the extent of surmising that THE LUNCH BOX could have even been in the main competition at Cannes while others have compared it with MONSOON WEDDING kind audience friendly feel-good crossover film and a notable debut from debutatant helmer-writer Ritesh Batra.

It’s the story of Saajan Fernandes (Irrfan Khan) who is about to retire and how his lunch box gets exchanged by a lunch box sent by Ila (Nimrat Kaur) to her husband (Nakul Vaid). This sparks off a beautiful relationship between Ila and Saajan.
