Amitabh Bachchan got a new lease of life after filmmaker Manmohan Desai’s COOLIE accident. Recently Amitabh Bachchan tweeted how after the fatal accident on July 26, 1982, he went into coma only to show signs of life on August 2, 1982 thanks to the toil of the doctors at Breach Candy Hospital in South Mumbai and the prayers of millions of his fan world over. Amitabh Bachchan thus celebrates August 2 as his second birthday.

Recalling the incident Glamsham.Com gives you few untold aspects of the accident and the movie.
In an interview film director Manmohan Desai gave the details of the accident. He said, ”I remember we were shooting at Bangalore. The day was Monday, 26 July, 1982. According to the schedule we were shooting a fight sequence where the villain Puneet Issar (better recognized as Duryodhan in B. R. Chopra’s T.V. Serial Mahabharat) had to hit a punch and Amit had to fall on a table. The scene went fine but when Amit fell on the table and gave a loud and painful shriek. I suspected trouble and rushed towards him.”
Desai continued, ”The sharp edge of the steel table ruptured his spleen and blood started oozing from his stomach. There was chaos on the set. Amitabh was immediacy airlifted to Mumbai where Yash Chopra, Amjad Khan (Amitabh’s buddy) and other film fraternity people had already arranged ambulance to avoid delay. Amitabh was taken to Breach Candy Hospital and immediately operated. However all attempts to recover him were in vain. Amitabh Bachchan went into coma and recovered after a week on August 2, thanks to the prayers and all round efforts of the team of doctors at the hospital.”
Newspapers were splashed with daily updates. Among the eminent personalities who visited Amitabh Bachchan at hospital was the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Readers would be surprised to know that after the COOLIE accident filmmaker Manmohan Deasi was so overwhelmed by Amiatbh Bachchan’s fan’s adoration that he changed the original tragic end in which Bachchan was supposed to die and included the dialogue ”Main to chala gaya tha, laut aaya hoon to bus aapki duaon se.”
