It is widely believed that the ticket to Bollywood is to have a family member in the. However in Anil Kapoor’s case, his father Surinder Kapoor despite being an assistant to K Asif, (the director of MUGHAL-E-AZAM), secretary to Shammi Kapoor and later turned an independent producer himself, yet he could not help Anil Kapoor in getting a successful break in Bollywood.
Anil Kapoor’s struggling started probably from the day when he was booted out from the reputed FTII (Film and Television Institute of India, Pune) after he failed in the written examination. In an interview Anil confessed, ”Yes, it is true that I failed in my written examination at the FTII.”
He continued, ”Peeved at the failure I confronted Girish Karnadji (eminent actor and film director), who was the then principal, and demanded why a written examination is necessary for an acting course. I even begged him to take my screen test, instead, but he turned down my request saying rules are rule and cannot be changed.”
Later Anil Kapoor did many minuscule roles to make his presence felt in Bollywood like HAMARE TUMHARE (1979) and SHAKTI (1982). In fact, he was even not entertained in his father’s home production. Though in his home production HUM PAANCH (1980) two aspiring young actors Gulshan Grover and Uday Chandra were given break, Anil Kapoor was offered a skimpy cameo!
