India deserves better! Deepika Padukone calls out Oscars for repeatedly snubbing Indian Cinema

Bollywood icon Deepika Padukone has spoken out about India’s consistent snubbing at the prestigious Academy Awards, stating that she feels the nation has been “robbed” of rightful Oscar victories over the years. In an open video posted on Instagram, the actress spoke about India’s experience at the Oscars and narrated the heartwarming moment when RRR took home the Oscar for Best Original Song in 2023 for “Naatu Naatu.”

India’s Historic Oscar Moment

Deepika, preparing to attend the Louis Vuitton show in Paris, reflected on the emotional outburst of RRR’s victory. “I was sitting in the audience when they said RRR, and I cried. Apart from the fact that I am Indian, I had absolutely nothing to do with that film, but that was a very big, very big moment. That was so personal,” she said. Her observation points out the pride of many Indians when the film was recognized internationally, but she also pointed out that India has previously been neglected in the past for many worthy films and artists.

The Snubbed Films

Deepika also highlighted a number of critically acclaimed Indian movies that did not get nominated for Oscars in her video. Some of the movies included All We Imagine As Light, Laapataa Ladies, Tumbbad, and The Lunchbox. All these movies, although receiving huge appreciation from the audience and critics, could not make it to the Academy Awards’ nomination list, adding to the anger among the audience and filmmakers.

Deepika’s Growing Global Influence

In the middle of her hard-hitting comments on India’s Oscar woes, Deepika remains busy establishing her global presence. She recently emerged as the first Indian to sign up as an international ambassador of luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton and jewellery brand Cartier. She had walked the red carpet for Louis Vuitton’s show in the Louvre in Paris, further cementing her status as a global icon.
