An FIR has been filed against the cast and makers of the recently released film Jaat for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. The complaint, lodged with the Jalandhar police, claims that a scene in the film has offended the Christian community. The FIR has been registered against actors Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, Vineet Kumar Singh, director Gopichand Malineni, and the film’s producers under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The film, which was released on April 10, has faced criticism for its depiction of a church scene, where Randeep Hooda’s character is shown inside a church beneath a crucifix, while members of the congregation are praying. The scene also portrays hooliganism and intimidation within the sacred space, which has led to backlash from the Christian community.
Alleged Intent to Incite Unrest
The complainant has alleged that the filmmakers deliberately released the film during the holy period of Good Friday and Easter to provoke anger among Christians and incite unrest across the country. “The director, writer, and producer deliberately released this film during this time to cause anger and provoke riots,” the complaint states, as quoted by NDTV. In response to the controversial scene, representatives from the Christian community have demanded a ban on the film and submitted a memorandum to the Joint Commissioner, requesting the suspension of its screenings in theatres.
