PHULE SINKING FAST! Pratik Gandhi and Patralekha’s Biopic Collects Meager Amounts on Day 3 – Is This the End?

Anant Mahadevan’s Phule, a biographical drama centered on the lives of revolutionary social reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, has had a subdued beginning at the box office. Despite its compelling subject matter and powerful performances by Pratik Gandhi and Patralekha, the film has not yet managed to create a substantial commercial impact.

Slow Start at the Box Office

Released on April 25, 2025, Phule opened to modest numbers. According to data from Sacnilk, the film earned ₹0.15 crore on Day 1, ₹0.3 crore on Day 2, and ₹0.6 crore on Day 3, bringing its total India Net collection to ₹1.05 crore. Its global collection currently stands at ₹1.23 crore, with no overseas revenue reported so far. The weekend figures suggest that while the film sparked interest among select audiences, it has struggled to attract the masses to theatres.

Historical Relevance Meets Limited Appeal

Phule traces the life and work of Jyotirao Phule and his wife Savitribai Phule—trailblazers in the fight against caste discrimination and champions of women’s education in 19th-century India. Pratik Gandhi essays the role of Jyotirao Phule, while Patralekha plays Savitribai in a film that aspires to shed light on an often-overlooked chapter of Indian history.

Despite its noble intent, critics and viewers have had mixed responses to the film’s execution. While the performances have been appreciated, the film’s narrative pacing and structure have been cited as drawbacks. Some have pointed out that the storytelling lacks the cinematic energy required to sustain audience engagement in a commercial setting.

Release Delay and Low Buzz

Originally scheduled for release on April 11, the film was delayed and eventually hit theatres on April 25. The postponement, coupled with minimal pre-release promotions and relatively low buzz, may have impacted its initial box office performance. Industry insiders have speculated that distribution challenges may have contributed to the delay.

Hope for a Second Wind

Though Phule has had a quiet start, the film may still find momentum through word of mouth and critical acclaim. With its socially significant subject, there is potential for the film to reach academic circles, educators, and social activists who value its message. Whether Phule can turn its slow start into a lasting impact remains to be seen, but its relevance in today’s socio-political climate is undeniable.
