Renowned filmmaker Atlee added a new feather to his cap as he was conferred with an honorary doctorate by the Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology in Chennai, the very university where his journey toward becoming a director first began. The prestigious honor was awarded during the 34th convocation ceremony held on Saturday, June 14, 2025, in the presence of his family and academic dignitaries.
A Homecoming of Honour and Emotion
The moment was deeply emotional and symbolic for Atlee, who once walked the corridors of Sathyabama University as a young student with dreams larger than life. Receiving the honorary degree from Chancellor Dr. Mariazeena Johnson, in front of his wife Priya, and his proud parents, Atlee was visibly moved.
Speaking at the event, the director expressed heartfelt gratitude. “It’s surreal to be honoured by the same university where I once walked in as a student with big dreams. It was here that I learned the power of belief,” he said.
Tribute to Mentors and Family
Atlee fondly remembered the late Jeppiaar, the Founder Chancellor of the university, who supported his early aspirations. “Many know Jeppiaar sir supported my education. But he did much more, he encouraged my creativity. I once told him I wanted to make a short film. He simply said, ‘Pick up a camera and become a director soon.’ That moment changed my life.”

He also took a moment to acknowledge his parents and shared a touching tribute to his wife Priya and their son. “My parents stood by me till I became a filmmaker. But the one who shaped who I am is my wife, Priya Atlee. And the person who’s made me a better human is my son.”
