Yash Raj Films is continuing to expand its lucrative Spy Universe, and the latest buzz suggests that Vicky Kaushal may soon be the next big name to join the franchise. A few weeks after reports confirmed YRF head Aditya Chopra’s intention to introduce a new generation of spies, fresh details now reveal that filmmaker Ali Abbas Zafar is the frontrunner to direct this much-anticipated standalone spy thriller.
While Vicky Kaushal’s involvement is still in the negotiation phase, insiders indicate that Chopra is seriously considering Zafar to helm the project, bringing back the director into the YRF fold after seven years. Zafar, known for directing hits like Sultan, Tiger Zinda Hai, and Gunday, has previously played a key role in shaping the spy genre within YRF’s portfolio. A final decision regarding the director is expected by year-end, most likely after Kaushal officially signs on.

Zafar is also developing another original action film, but it may take a backseat if he commits to this high-profile spy movie. If finalized, this film would be Zafar’s second outing in the Spy Universe and his directorial comeback under the YRF banner.
Kaushal’s entry into the spy world comes at a career peak. Fresh off the massive success of Chhaava, which grossed over ₹500 crore, the actor is currently working on Mahavatar, a mythological epic, and Love & War, a period romance by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
This potential project would mark the ninth film in YRF’s expanding Spy Universe. Upcoming titles include War 2 (August 14, 2025) starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR, followed by Alpha with Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, and Pathaan 2 with Shah Rukh Khan. The Kaushal-led film is expected to follow soon after.
