IU and Byeon Woo Seok’s Upcoming Drama “Wife of a 21st Century Prince” – Release Window, Plot, and More!

The Chemistry is Electric! IU and Byeon Woo Seok to Star in "Wife of a 21st Century Prince" - Filming Begins This Month

IU is set to return to the small screen with a brand-new character in the upcoming modern romance drama Wife of 21st Century Prince (also known as 21st Century Grand Prince’s Wife). Starring alongside Lovely Runner actor Byeon Woo Seok, IU takes on the role of Seong Hee Joo, a chaebol heiress whose lavish lifestyle contrasts with her perceived “commoner” status in a monarchy-based alternate South Korea.

A Glamorous Yet Misunderstood Heiress

At a recent fan meeting attended by thousands of Uaenas, IU revealed that filming for the drama is nearly halfway complete and will wrap up by January or February 2026. She shared exclusive glimpses of her character, cautioning fans not to judge Seong Hee Joo too quickly. “She may seem like someone with bad intentions,” IU explained, “but there’s much more depth to her story.”

Photos shared at the event showed IU dressed to impress—true to her character’s heiress image. Outfits ranged from elegant business suits to luxurious high-fashion ensembles, accessorized with diamond jewelry, designer handbags, and expensive cars. The style matches Seong Hee Joo’s position as a powerful and wealthy figure in the drama’s fictional monarchy.

A Unique Contract Marriage in a Royal World

Wife of 21st Century Prince explores a fictional South Korea where a monarchy still exists. IU’s character Seong Hee Joo enters into a contract marriage with Prince Lee Wan, portrayed by Byeon Woo Seok. While Seong Hee Joo seeks a royal title to elevate her status, Lee Wan—though born into royalty—lacks power and influence. Their mutually beneficial arrangement gradually transforms into a “sweet and spicy” romance filled with emotional depth, unexpected challenges, and undeniable chemistry.

The drama is expected to air in late 2026, with fans already eagerly anticipating IU’s fashionable and complex new role.
