A Tale Embedded in Struggle and Solidarity
Following a big splash at global film festivals, Neeraj Ghaywan’s much-awaited film Homebound is finally making its way for the Indian theatrical release on 26th September 2025. The official trailer, which was released on Wednesday, offers an emotional peep into the tale revolving around friendship, ambition, and the battle against discrimination based on caste and religion.
The 2-minute 52-second trailer brings us face to face with Chandan Kumar (Vishal Jethwa) and Mohammed Shoaib Ali (Ishaan Khatter), two young men from oppressed sections whose dreams are to become police officers. Their aspiration is not merely about getting a job—it’s a quest for redemption and earning respect in a society that has consistently kept them at the margins.
Their path crosses Janhvi Kapoor’s character, a young woman also yearning for freedom from the shackles of caste and hierarchy. When the three of them become close, they overcome system-based obstacles with strength and solidarity.
International Recognition and Emotional Impact
Homebound premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival to a 9-minute standing ovation, and then was awarded second runner-up for the International People’s Choice Award in the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival.
Made by Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, and Adar Poonawalla, executive produced by Martin Scorsese, the film has been appreciated for its nuanced handling of India’s socio-political reality. Ghaywan comes back to directing after his much-praised debut Masaan (2015).
