Assamese music legend Zubeen Garg died suddenly on September 19, 2025, in a scuba diving incident in Singapore. The 52-year-old singer had arrived in the city to perform at the 4th North East India Festival, set to take place on September 20. Singapore police saved Garg from the water, took him to the nearest hospital, and admitted him to the ICU, reports said. Despite all medical efforts, he could not be saved.
A social media video captures Garg happily jumping into the sea while wearing a life jacket. But later, as reports indicate, he took it off and jumped in once more, which resulted in the unfortunate accident. Another video taken barely a day prior captures him smiling and singing Tears in Heaven at a restaurant with other performers, cherishing the moment—making his untimely death all the more tragic.
After the news, Garg’s wife Garima Saikia Garg and some family members could be seen weeping. His sudden death has shocked Assam and the entire Indian music fraternity.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attested the incident, saying, “Zubeen died while swimming without a life jacket,” and added that Singapore authorities will interrogate those who were with him at the time of the swim. He also attested that an autopsy would take place on Saturday to confirm the cause of death.
Last video of Zubeen. I too am a man broken with grief, just like you. He jumped with a life jacket on. After 1.26 seconds he returned to yacht, took off his life jacket & jumped again. This time, he came back lifeless.#zubeen#Zubeen_Garg #ZubeenGargDeath #zubeengargaccident pic.twitter.com/yttAESC8ey
