Jim Carrey could return to the big screen soon in a new futuristic role. The Canadian-American actor, 63, is said to be in negotiation to appear in a live-action version of The Jetsons, the popular 1960s animated sitcom. The movie is under development at Warner Bros. Pictures, and if it goes ahead, it will be the first Jetsons film since the 1990 animated movie Jetsons: The Movie.
Jurassic World Dominion director Colin Trevorrow is set to direct the movie, according to The Wrap, with screenwriter Joe Epstein attached. While details of the plot are a secret, the movie will see George Jetson and his family of the future — wife Jane, teenage daughter Judy, young son Elroy, and family dog Astro — brought to the live-action world for the first time.
Designed by animation greats William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, The Jetsons first appeared on ABC from September 1962 to March 1963. Based in Orbit City, the futuristic metropolis grew a world of flying automobiles, robot housemaids, and space-age existence. Throughout the decades, various attempts have been made to reboot The Jetsons onto the big screen — including ones by Adam Shankman (2003), Robert Rodriguez (2007), and Robert Zemeckis (2017) — but none saw the light of day.
Carrey, who emerged into stardom playing memorable comedies such as The Mask and Ace Ventura, indicated in 2022 that he was stepping away from acting. Promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 2, he indicated that he may return if a really significant script were to come along. In 2024, he explained he wasn’t retiring, but “power-resting.”
Most recently known for portraying Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic movies, Carrey’s most recent non-franchise film was the 2016 crime drama Dark Crimes, which was inspired by a true-life murder case.
