It was sunshine, sand, and Sooraj Hua Madham all over — until Karan Johar’s stomach had its own drama. Shooting Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in Egypt’s Farafra Desert in the early 2000s, the director was in a rather unglamorous situation. In the midst of golden dunes and movie-ish vibes, KJo was struck by a sudden, virulent attack of food poisoning that had him scurrying for shelter — literally.
Remembering the episode, Karan Johar once confessed that he once suffered a “bad loose motions attack” in the middle of the desert, kilometres away from any rest room or vanity van. Praying for relief, he ran across the sandy wasteland until he came across a limestone rock that provided a semblance of privacy. Believing he had finally reached privacy, Karan squatted behind the rock — to find he wasn’t alone.
To his complete embarrassment, there was another fellow squatting behind a nearby limestone, fighting the same stomach disaster. “We both looked at one another; we both knew we were hiding,” Karan reported, chuckling about the experience. “It was the most humiliating moment. I thought, ‘I’m going to die.’ We exchanged silent wordless glances and vowed never to tell anyone.”

The director facetiously said that the spot now contains his “remains for life” and disclosed that the mystery man continues to work at Dharma Productions. “I never looked at him the same way afterwards,” he confessed.
Bollywood is famous for its bigger-than-life drama, yet Karan Johar’s Egyptian adventure is proof that reality can be greater than fiction at times. What started off as a fantasy desert shoot for one of Bollywood’s most memorable songs turned out to be a moment that KJo — and his hapless partner-in-crime — will never forget.
