From Rap to Diplomacy: Nicki Minaj Takes a Stand with Trump on Nigeria’s Human Rights Issue

Nicki Minaj Praises Trump's Efforts to Combat Christian Persecution in Nigeria

Rap superstar Nicki Minaj has stepped into a global human rights conversation, voicing strong support for former U.S. President Donald Trump’s stance on the persecution of religious minorities particularly Christians in Nigeria. Speaking at an event hosted by the U.S. Embassy to the United Nations, Minaj thanked Trump “for prioritizing this issue and for his leadership,” drawing attention from both her fans and political observers.

Minaj, known for chart-topping hits like Super Bass and Starships, has previously used her platform to highlight violence against Christians in Nigeria. The subject has increasingly appeared in Trump’s own statements, and the rapper’s remarks on Tuesday aligned with the former president’s recent criticism of the Nigerian government. Trump has accused Nigerian authorities of failing to prevent attacks on Christian communities, a claim disputed by the government in Abuja.

Standing alongside Washington’s ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, Minaj underscored the urgency of the issue. She described the situation in Nigeria as dire: “Christians are being targeted, driven from their homes and killed. Churches have been burned. Families have been torn apart, and entire communities live in fear constantly, simply because of how they pray.”

Minaj also emphasized that her advocacy is rooted in her own sense of spiritual freedom. She has often spoken about her gratitude for being able to worship freely in the United States, framing religious liberty as a universal right rather than a partisan matter. “Protecting Christians in Nigeria is not about taking sides or dividing people,” she said. “It is about uniting humanity.”

Her appearance came shortly after she endorsed one of Trump’s social media posts alleging that Nigeria had “failed to stop attacks on Christians.” The issue has long been championed by segments of the U.S. Christian conservative community, with Trump frequently citing it to call for international pressure on Nigeria.

Ambassador Waltz echoed Minaj’s sentiments, acknowledging the Nigerian government’s insistence that terrorism affects all faiths. However, he argued that “a body of evidence… paints a very grim picture of disproportionate suffering among Christians.”

Minaj’s involvement adds a surprising layer to the conversation. As a prominent feminist icon known for provocative performances such as her 2012 mock exorcism at the Grammys the rapper has not always aligned with religious conservatives. Yet her recent remarks signal a commitment to spotlighting global religious freedom issues, regardless of political expectations.
