Extraction 3 officially happening with Chris Hemsworth and Idris Elba returning

Extraction 3 is officially in the works at Netflix with Chris Hemsworth and Idris Elba returning, continuing one of the platform’s biggest action franchises.

Extraction 3 is officially locked in, and Netflix is not slowing down one of its most successful action franchises. Chris Hemsworth is returning as Tyler Rake, and Idris Elba is back in the mix, which already tells you the scale is about to get bigger. This is not just another sequel announcement. This is Netflix doubling down on a franchise that has consistently delivered  numbers, recall, and global pull. The third installment will once again be directed by Sam Hargrave, the man responsible for turning Extraction into a full-blown action identity.

The screenplay is being written by David Weil, with the story still rooted in the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks.

Production is expected to begin this summer, which means the timeline is already moving fast.

What is interesting is how tightly they are holding back the story. There is no official plot yet, but if you look at how the franchise has evolved, you can already predict the tone.

In the first film, Tyler Rake was a broken black ops mercenary thrown into a high-risk rescue mission that spiraled out of control. It was raw, brutal and grounded in survival.

Then came the second film, which pushed things further. Rake was brought back from the edge of death and thrown into an even more complex extraction involving a gangster’s family. The action got bigger, the emotional stakes got deeper, and the character became more than just a machine.

Now with the third film, expectations are very clear.

This is going to be the most dangerous version of Tyler Rake yet.

Also returning is Golshifteh Farahani, which hints that the core emotional thread of the story is not being abandoned. That balance between action and character has been one of the biggest reasons the franchise works.

Behind the scenes, the Russo Brothers’ production company AGBO continues to back the project. Their partnership with Netflix has already delivered films like The Gray Man and The Electric State, but Extraction remains their most consistent action success.

And that matters.

Because in a space where most action franchises fade after one strong film, Extraction has managed to build continuity. It has created a character that audiences actually want to follow, not just watch explode things.

The real question now is scale.

With Hemsworth and Elba sharing space again, the film has the potential to shift from a solo survival story to something bigger, possibly even expanding into a wider universe. Netflix has been quietly building franchises like this, and Extraction is one of the few that genuinely has the legs for it.

No release date yet, no teaser, no first look. Just a confirmation.

But sometimes that is enough.

Because if the first two films proved anything, it is that when Tyler Rake comes back, he does not come back quietly.
