After decades away from live-action films, Rick Moranis is officially back. The beloved actor made a surprise return in footage from Spaceballs 2, unveiled at CinemaCon 2026. Moranis reprises his iconic role as Dark Helmet from Spaceballs, marking his first live-action movie performance since Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves. His return ends a 30-year gap that has made him one of Hollywood’s most famously absent stars.
The teaser shown at the event leaned into the franchise’s signature parody style, including a comedic moment referencing Avatar. In the scene, Moranis’ Dark Helmet humorously interacts with a towering Na’vi character, delivering a callback line that drew strong reactions from the audience.
The sequel, officially titled Spaceballs: The New One, brings back original cast members including Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga, while also introducing new faces like Josh Gad and Lewis Pullman.
The project is backed by comedy legend Mel Brooks, who originally created the franchise, with direction by Josh Greenbaum.
Moranis stepping back into the spotlight is easily the biggest highlight, signaling a rare and long-awaited return that fans have hoped for over the years.
