The recently released streaming series Matka King is officially set to return with its second season. The announcement was made by the makers on social media on Thursday after the strong response received by the first season.
Starring Vijay Varma in the lead role, the series is set in 1960s Bombay and tells a story filled with crime, ambition, power and identity. The show follows the journey of a cotton trader who starts the illegal “Matka” gambling game and slowly builds a powerful underground gambling empire across Mumbai.
Vijay Varma plays the role of a fictional gambling kingpin who operates several matkas, also known as gambling pots, in the city. The series gained attention for its dark storytelling, strong performances and detailed portrayal of old Bombay’s underground gambling world.
Along with Vijay Varma, the show also stars Kritika Kamra, Sai Tamhankar, Siddharth Jadhav, Bhupendra Jadawat and Gulshan Grover in important roles. The supporting cast includes Bharat Jadhav, Girish Kulkarni, Jamie Lever, Kishor Kadam, Cyrus Sahukar, Ishtiyak Khan and others.
The series blends crime, politics and social change while showing the rise of gambling culture in post independence Mumbai. Many viewers and critics praised the show for its realistic visuals, period setting, production design and intense performances.
Abhay Koranne has created and written the series along with Nagraj Popatrao Manjule, who has also directed the show. The series has been produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur, Nagraj Popatrao Manjule, Gargi Kulkarni, Ashwini Sidwani and Ashish Aryan under the banners of Roy Kapur Films, Aatpat and SMR Entertainment.
