The musical biopic Michael continued its steady run at the Indian box office during its fourth weekend. The film collected Rs. 3.90 crore gross over the weekend, with Sunday contributing the biggest share at Rs. 2.10 crore. After four weeks in theatres, the Jaafar Jackson starrer has now reached a total of Rs. 69.65 crore gross in India. The movie is currently in the final phase of its theatrical run and is expected to add a few more crores before ending its journey.
Trade estimates suggest that Michael may finish this week with collections in the range of Rs. 71 crore to Rs. 72 crore gross. The film is also expected to cross the Rs. 75 crore mark during its fifth week. Based on its current performance trend, the biographical drama is likely to close its lifetime business under the Rs. 80 crore gross mark in India.
Despite not belonging to a major action or superhero franchise, Michael has managed to perform well in the Indian market. The film has now become the third Hollywood HIT of the year in India after Project Hail Mary and Lee Cronin’s The Mummy. All three films released within a short period of around one month and surprised the trade with their performances.
Another Hollywood release, The Devil Wears Prada 2, is also doing well at the Indian box office. While the film may not reach HIT status, it is still expected to end its run as a successful venture.
What makes these results notable is that these films are not part of the usual Hollywood franchises that traditionally dominate the Indian market. In recent years, Indian audiences have mostly supported big IP based releases. However, the success of films like Michael shows that audiences are also willing to watch different kinds of Hollywood films if the content connects with them.
