Marvel Studios has finally given fans their first official look at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Victor von Doom, one of the most powerful villains in Marvel history. The reveal came through a brand new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, released just before this week’s San Diego Comic Con. After months of keeping the character hidden from the public, Marvel has now confirmed Downey’s dramatic return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a completely new role.
The excitement began on Sunday when the official social media account for The Fantastic Four: First Steps shared a short teaser from the upcoming film. In the clip, Sue Storm, played by Vanessa Kirby, asks Reed Richards, played by Pedro Pascal, how much time they have left. Reed replies that there is not much time remaining, hinting at the dangerous events that are about to unfold. Soon after, Marvel released the full trailer, giving fans their long awaited first glimpse of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
Marvel had previously shown footage from the film only at exclusive industry events such as CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Fans outside those events had only seen small teaser videos featuring different groups of characters. This latest trailer marks the first time the public has been able to see Downey’s transformation into the iconic villain.
Robert Downey Jr. became one of the biggest stars in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after playing Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, for more than a decade. He first appeared in Iron Man in 2008 and remained at the heart of the franchise until Tony Stark’s emotional death in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. His return as Doctor Doom is one of the biggest surprises in Marvel’s recent history and has already created huge excitement among fans.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to release in theaters on December 18. According to Marvel, the story will bring together heroes from three different universes as they face a threat unlike anything they have experienced before. The film is expected to unite the main Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X Men in one massive crossover.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has explained that the movie takes inspiration from a famous Marvel comic storyline where different universes collide. This allows characters from separate franchises and timelines to meet for the first time on the big screen.

Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming and Rebecca Romijn are all set to reprise their iconic roles. Channing Tatum, who recently appeared in Deadpool and Wolverine, will also be part of the adventure.
Joining them are the stars of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, including Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss Bachrach and Joseph Quinn. With Robert Downey Jr. leading the story as Doctor Doom, Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s biggest and most ambitious films ever.
