Actor Rani Mukerji has received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from La Trobe University for her contribution to Indian cinema and her support for women, children and marginalized communities. The honour marks another important moment in her career, which has continued for nearly three decades.
While accepting the honorary doctorate, Rani reflected on her childhood dreams and how cinema eventually became the path through which she wanted to make a difference. She spoke about her wish to make both her family and country proud and explained why the recognition felt deeply personal to her.
“When I was a little girl, like everyone else, I wanted to make my family and my country proud. Cinema became the medium to achieve this. Receiving this honorary doctorate from La Trobe University is one of the most humbling moments of my life.”
Rani also looked back at the early days of her career. She entered the film industry as a teenager without a clear plan for what the future would bring. According to the actor, she focused on doing her work sincerely and gradually found stories that connected with her personally.
“When I entered the film industry as a teenager, I had absolutely no roadmap. I was simply trying to do my job in the best way possible. I have always chosen films that have made an impact in my heart first. A story that needs to be told. A story that would inspire and empower. I have always silently worked to represent the powerful girls and women of India through cinema that has its heart in the right place to receive this honor for doing what I feel is right is further motivating me to keep fighting the good fight.”
The recognition was also celebrated by Yash Raj Films, which shared a message about Rani’s journey and her gratitude for the honour.
The actor’s career includes several films that have focused on strong women and important social issues. Her recent work in Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway also brought attention to a difficult real life inspired story involving a mother and her children.
For Rani, the honorary doctorate represents recognition not only for her acting career but also for the stories and causes she has chosen to support through cinema.
