Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency hit screens on 17 January 2025, depicting the life of suffering Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during the Emergency rule in India (1975-1977). Although it is about political drama, the film did not create a major impact at the box office. After a week’s run, Emergency continues to be a low-performing flick, showing no improvements in collections in the last five days.
The film encountered a few obstacles before its release, including delays in certification by the CBFC; all of these struggles would have made it hard for that film to gain traction. The movie is also banned in Punjab, adding to its woefully low collection. On top of that, a tepid response from moviegoers has rendered Emergency incapable of pulling viewers to theaters.

While this marks Kangana’s return to the silver screen two years later, becoming her debut effort as a solo director, Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi was received with a mixed opinion among most. The Emergency was her first complete effort as an independent director; unfortunately, there has not been a good run for Kangana at the box office since her last hit, the 2015 blockbuster Tanu Weds Manu Returns. Her 2023 release, Tejas, also did not perform well with the audience.
Co-produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, Emergency boasts of a star-studded supporting cast, including Anupam Kher, Milind Soman, and Shreyas Talpade. However, it faces some tough competition from the debut films of Rasha Thadani and Aaman Devgan, Azaad. Further challenges are yet to come, as Emergency is going to face yet another competition against Sky Force, releasing on 24 January 2025.
This may not be Kangana’s blockbuster, but it bears testimony to her zealousness as director and actress in Indian cinema.
