Supergirl Faces A Tough Box Office Run Despite Strong Cast

Supergirl has struggled at the box office, with reports suggesting the DC film may fall well short of its estimated break even target of $300 million.

Supergirl has had a disappointing start at the box office despite generating interest following Milly Alcock’s debut as Kara Zor El in Superman. The film stars Milly Alcock in the lead role alongside Jason Momoa, but its theatrical performance has been weaker than expected both in North America and overseas. While Alcock received positive reactions after appearing in David Corenswet’s Superman, that support has not translated into strong ticket sales for her standalone film.

The movie earned $37.1 million, which is around ₹351 crores, during its opening weekend in North America. Worldwide, it collected $62.6 million, or approximately ₹592 crores. Early estimates suggest that after Monday, the film’s total reached around $38 million in North America and $68 million globally. The figures indicate that the film has struggled to build momentum after its opening weekend, with reports suggesting that audience response and word of mouth have not helped its performance.

David Corenswet’s appearance in the film was also used as part of its marketing campaign. However, that strategy does not appear to have significantly improved the film’s box office performance. Industry observers believe that the movie’s slow start has made it difficult to recover during its first week in theatres.

According to a Variety report, Warner Bros and DC spent around $170 million, or approximately ₹1609 crores, on producing the film. The marketing budget is reported to be another $120 million, or around ₹1135 crores. Based on these costs, reports suggest the studios could face losses of more than $100 million, which is roughly ₹946 crores, if the film does not improve its theatrical run.

Reports also suggest that the film needs to earn around $300 million, or approximately ₹2839 crores, worldwide to reach its estimated break even point. However, current projections indicate that it could finish its global run at around $200 million.

The film also faces increasing competition, with several major Hollywood releases arriving in July, including The Odyssey and Spider Man: Brand New Day. Meanwhile, reports state that Milly Alcock received $400,000, or around ₹37 crores, for the film and would have earned an additional bonus if it had performed well commercially.

Although Supergirl has faced a difficult start, Warner Bros and DC continue to move forward with future projects, including sequels to Superman starring David Corenswet and The Batman starring Robert Pattinson.
