Weapons’ WINS BIG! ‘Freakier Friday’ Puts Up a FIGHT in Second Place

August kicked off with a bang as Weapons, the latest horror film from Barbarian director Zach Cregger, dominated the box office

August kicked off with a bang as Weapons, the latest horror film from Barbarian director Zach Cregger, dominated the box office. The film earned $42.5 million domestically across 3,202 theaters and a massive $70 million internationally, bringing Warner Bros. its seventh No. 1 opening of the year and sixth consecutive film to open with over $40 million.

Set in the eerie town of Maybrook, Weapons tells the unsettling story of 17 children mysteriously vanishing at 2:17 a.m., leaving behind traumatized parents and a town spiraling into paranoia and dark humor. The film boasts a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, adding fuel to its viral buzz.

Disney’s Freakier Friday Debuts Strong in Second Place
In a striking contrast, Disney’s chaotic comedy Freakier Friday debuted in second place with a solid $29 million. A sequel to the 2003 hit, it brings back Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, this time exploring a new double body-swap twist involving Lohan’s teen daughter and future stepdaughter. Social media chatter and viral marketing helped both top films gain traction.

Other Box Office Highlights
The Fantastic Four: First Steps dropped to third with $15.5 million, after a stellar $118 million opening.

The Bad Guys 2 came in fourth with $10.4 million.

The Naked Gun followed in fifth, earning $8.4 million.

Meanwhile, Jurassic World Rebirth climbed toward $800 million globally, despite placing seventh this weekend.

Warner Bros. continues its strong summer with back-to-back hits including Minecraft, Superman, Sinners, and now Weapons, setting what analysts call a “blueprint” for summer box office success.
