Suriya’s latest film Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, continues its steady run at the box office since its release on May 1. With strong performances and growing buzz, the film is now just shy of reaching the ₹50 crore milestone.
Six-Day Box Office Run Shows Momentum
On its sixth day, Retro collected ₹1.23 crore from morning and matinee shows alone, pushing its total collection to ₹47.78 crore. With the final numbers for Tuesday’s evening shows still pending, the film may very well cross the ₹50 crore mark soon. The movie saw a healthy 17.58% occupancy in Tamil screenings and 12.11% in the Telugu version. However, show counts are beginning to dip in Tamil Nadu and Telangana, with cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, and Bengaluru still offering over 100 screenings daily. Hyderabad remains a stronghold for the Telugu version.

Mixed Reviews but Strong Support for Suriya
While Retro has been praised for its ambition, reviews have been mixed. A review from News18 remarked, “I wish Retro was just about one thing,” critiquing the film’s attempt to juggle nostalgia, ecoactivism, and Tarantino-inspired themes all at once. The reviewer also lamented that filmmakers often fail to utilize Suriya’s dedication to the fullest, despite his consistent commitment to his roles.
