Bollywood box-office report of the week : 15 december 2011

This week will see the release of Vinay-Neha's PAPPU CAN'T DANCE SAALA, the IITian's directed WITH LOVE, DELHI and Pawan Gill's, Sunny Gill and Simran Kaur Mundi starrer, JO HUM CHAHEIN. If we have to stick out our neck and make a prediction we will chose JO HUM CHAHEIN as the dark horse of this Friday. Having said that Tom Cruise's MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE GHOST PROTOCOL and its dubbed versions will be more than a formidable opponent for most of the Hindi releases.

Moving on, a large section of the trade and media expected Yash Raj Films' LADIES V/S RICKY BAHL to continue the success of the team's last venture, BAND BAAJA BAARAAT but that was not to be. After an ordinary first day the Ranveer, Anushka and Dipannita starrer saw marginal pickups on Saturday and Sunday netting 16 crores during the opening weekend. While the 25 crore (all inclusive release cost) LADIES V/S RICKY BAHL will be a profitable venture for the makers and worldwide distributors (Yash Raj Films), thanks to the non-theatrical earnings, it is unlikely to be termed as a clear success. The film has also disappointed in the overseas grossing ?75,000 from UK and $ 222,000 from the US during the opening weekend (9-11 December). The other release of the week, Maqbool Khan's, LANKA, failed to cut much ice with the audience and has little or no chances of survival.

Checking out THE DIRTY PICTURE, well, the Milan Luthria directed Naseer, Vidya, Emraan and Tusshar starrer is moving from strength to strength. After a superb weekend THE DIRTY PICTURE was rock steady during the weekdays as well as it collected 8.65 crore from Bombay (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 2 crore from Ahmedabad, 20 lakhs from Surat, 21 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 6 cinemas unreceived), 44.60 lakhs from Rajkot, 5.20 lakhs from Jamnagar, 13 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 60 lakhs from Pune, 20.50 lakhs from Nasik, 8 lakhs from Goa, 5.25 crore from Delhi city, 65 lakhs from Noida, 50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 40 lakhs from Kanpur, 56.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 30.20 lakhs from Agra, 20.50 lakhs from Allahabad, 90 lakhs from Gurgaon, 15.30 lakhs from Faridabad, 5.60 lakhs from Kurukshetra, 10.50 lakhs from Panipat, 26.20 lakhs from Chandigarh, 10 lakhs from Jalandhar, 8 lakhs from Amritsar, 11 lakhs from Ludhiana, 7.25 lakhs from Bhatinda, 1.55 crore from Calcutta, 2 lakhs from Darjeeling, 9.50 lakhs from Siliguri, 61 lakhs from Nagpur, 30.20 lakhs from Raipur, 70 lakhs from Indore (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 42.25 lakhs from Bhopal (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 9.65 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 5 cinemas unreceived), 1.20 crore from Jaipur, 5.20 lakhs from Jodhpur (collections from 5 cinemas unreceived), 13 lakhs from Ajmer, 10.35 lakhs from Bikaner, 26.50 lakhs from Kota, 15.50 lakhs from Udaipur, 1.30 crore from Hyderabad, 21.75 lakhs from Aurangabad (collections from 4 cinemas unreceived), 10.50 lakhs from Latur, 5.20 lakhs from Nanded, 92 lakhs from Bangalore, 10.20 lakhs from Mangalore, 5 lakhs from Vijaywada, 7.35 lakhs from Visakhapatnam, 7.15 lakhs from Madras and 7.20 lakhs from Kochi. Netting 50 crore from India (52.50 crores including the dubbed versions), THE DIRTY PICTURE can safely be called a super hit. Taking into account the strong second weekend TDP can also touch the blockbuster status! The film though is so-so in the overseas grossing an ordinary ?93,500 from UK but a quite better $462,000 from US till the second weekend (9-11 December).

The performance of I AM SINGH was quite on the expected lines with the audience failing to connect with it. The film collected 5 lakhs from Bombay (collections from 20 cinemas unreceived), 1.50 lakhs from Ahmedabad (collections from 5 cinemas unreceived) and 5 lakhs from Delhi city. Netting about 35 lakhs in the opening week, I AM SINGH is a washout.

Meanwhile the collections of Rohit Dhawan's Akshay, John, Deepika and Chitrangda starrer, DESI BOYZ, crashed in the second week but the film is already a profitable venture. During the week DESI BOYZ collected 1.50 crore from Bombay (collections from 34 cinemas unreceived), 35 lakhs from Ahmedabad (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 5 lakhs from Surat, 5 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 5 cinemas unreceived), 12.50 lakhs from Rajkot, 5.65 lakhs from Jamnagar, 3 lakhs from Bhavnagar, 10.55 lakhs from Pune, 3.25 lakhs from Nasik, 2.60 lakhs from Goa, 90 lakhs from Delhi city, 10 lakhs from Noida, 5.60 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 6.50 lakhs from Kanpur, 10 lakhs from Lucknow, 4 lakhs from Agra, 1.75 lakhs from Allahabad, 12.50 lakhs from Gurgaon, 2.50 lakhs from Faridabad, 2 lakhs from Panipat, 7.65 lakhs from Chandigarh, 3.20 lakhs from Jalandhar, 2 lakhs from Amritsar, 2.55 lakhs from Ludhiana, 2.20 lakhs from Bhatinda, 7.20 lakhs from Calcutta, 1.75 lakhs from Siliguri, 1.20 lakhs from Guwahati, 8.75 lakhs from Nagpur, 6 lakhs from Raipur, 8.50 lakhs from Indore (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 5.55 lakhs from Bhopal, 1.50 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 30 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 2 lakhs from Jodhpur (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 3 lakhs from Ajmer, 2.10 lakhs from Bikaner, 3.35 lakhs from Kota, 3 lakhs from Udaipur, 16.50 lakhs from Hyderabad, 2 lakhs from Aurangabad (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived, 1 lakh from Latur, 21.20 lakhs from Bangalore, 2.35 lakhs from Mangalore and 1 .35 lakhs from Madras. Adding another 8.50 crores, DESI BOYZ has netted 47 crores in two weeks from India and is an above average fare taking in to account the 27 crore satellite rights, 6-7 crore audio rights and 15-16 crore UK subsidy ( to be received later this month). The film has also done very well in the overseas grossing ? 548,500 from UK and $1,066,200 from US till the third weekend (9-11 December).

Concluding with Imtiaz Ali's Ranbir-Nargis starrer, ROCKSTAR, the film is ending it's Indian run as it collected 15 lakhs from Bombay (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 2 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2.20 lakhs from Pune, 25 lakhs from Delhi city, 3.60 lakhs from Noida, 1.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 2 lakhs from Lucknow, 4.20 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.35 lakhs from Indore, 1.35 lakhs from Bhopal, 2 lakhs from Jaipur, 2.65 lakhs from Hyderabad and 5.10 lakhs from Bangalore.
