The prominent releases of this week include Vishesh Films and Fox Star Studios’ KHAMOSHIYAN and the Vibu Puri directed Ayushmann Khurrana and Pallavi Sharda starrer, HAWAIZAADA.
It promises to be an interesting and unpredictable clash as both films are equally loaded, though belonging to entirely different genres.
Moving on, the two major releases of the week, T-Series’ Neeraj-Akshay venture BABY and the Sonam starrer DOLLY KI DOLI, took the expected course.
The first film, BABY, went the team’s SPECIAL 26 way (S 26 had a 7 crore first day), and after a good to decent 9 crore first day, the film (BABY) picked up on each subsequent day netting nearly 50 crore during the 4-day extended Republic Day weekend.
If BABY can manage a decent show in the second week as well, it will turn out to be the first success/hit of 2015. Very much like SPECIAL 26, BABY has performed well in the overseas (yet again barring UK) grossing £70,000 from UK and $440,000 from the US, during the opening weekend (23-25 January).
The second release, Malaika-Arbaaz’s DOLLY KI DOLI had a dull 3 crore first day and saw some pick up during the subsequent days and ended the four day weekend netting around 15 crore. Given the moderate budget, DKD still has some chances, provided it manages a decent second week.
Moving on to the older release, in particular Bipasha Basu’s ALONE, the film held fairly collecting 2 crore from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 50 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 11.65 lakhs from Surat, 8.65 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 6 cinemas unreceived), 10.50 lakhs from Rajkot, 45 lakhs from Pune, 6.50 lakhs from Nasik, 4.50 lakhs from Goa, 2.55 lakhs from Belgaum, 1.65 crore from Delhi city, 17.50 lakhs from Noida, 27 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 15.50 lakhs from Kanpur, 21.25 lakhs from Lucknow, 3.15 lakhs from Agra, 6 lakhs from Allahabad, 2 lakhs from Aligarh, 4.55 lakhs from Dehradun, 16.25 lakhs from Gurgaon, 6.50 lakhs from Faridabad, 15 lakhs from Chandigarh, 10.50 lakhs from Jalandhar, 8.50 lakhs from Amritsar, 8 lakhs from Ludhiana, 2.75 lakhs from Bhatinda, 2.50 lakhs from Ambala, 40 lakhs from Calcutta, 4 lakhs from Siliguri, 2.25 lakhs from Patna, 3 lakhs from Dhanbad, 2.65 lakhs from Ranchi, 3 lakhs from Bhubaneshwar, 25 lakhs from Nagpur, 10 lakhs from Jabalpur, 10 lakhs from Raipur, 15 lakhs from Indore (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 3.15 lakhs from Gwalior (collections from 5 cinemas unreceived), 10 lakhs from Bhopal (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 30 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 5 cinemas unreceived), 9.50 lakhs from Jodhpur, 6 lakhs from Ajmer, 1.25 lakhs from Bikaner, 6 lakhs from Kota, 5 lakhs from Udaipur, 65 lakhs from Hyderabad, 8 lakhs from Aurangabad (collections from 2 cinemas unreceived), 20 lakhs from Bangalore, 3.15 lakhs from Mangalore, 3.25 lakhs from Visakhapatnam and 1 lakh from Kochi.
Netting 18 crore during the opening week, ALONE may just scrape through to safety, once the non-theatrical rights are accounted for.
The other two releases of the week, the Prakash Jha venture, CRAZY CUKKAD FAMILY and Zayed-Tena’s SHARAFAT GAYI TEL LENE, are washouts.
Meanwhile after a fair first week the Manoj Bajpayee, Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha starrer, TEVAR, crashed badly in the second week as it collected 25 lakhs from Bombay (collections from other cinemas unreceived), 15 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 5.50 lakhs from Surat, 2.50 lakhs from Baroda (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 5 lakhs from Rajkot, 5 lakhs from Pune, 1 lakh from Nasik, 25 lakhs from Delhi city, 7 lakhs from Noida, 10.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 7.50 lakhs from Kanpur, 15.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 2 lakhs from Agra, 3 lakhs from Allahabad, 1.50 lakhs from Aligarh, 6.25 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.50 lakhs from Faridabad, 4 lakhs from Chandigarh, 4 lakhs from Jalandhar, 1.50 lakhs from Amritsar, 2.50 lakhs from Ludhiana, 10 lakhs from Calcutta, 1 lakh from Siliguri, 1.15 lakhs from Bhubaneshwar, 2.50 lakhs from Nagpur, 2.25 lakhs from Jabalpur, 3.25 lakhs from Raipur, 5.75 lakhs from Indore, 1.50 lakhs from Gwalior, 2 lakhs from Bhopal, 10 lakhs from Jaipur (collections from 3 cinemas unreceived), 4 lakhs from Jodhpur, 1.50 lakhs from Kota, 2 lakhs from Udaipur, 5 lakhs from Hyderabad, 1 lakh from Aurangabad and 3 lakhs from Bangalore.
