Kangana Ranaut recently addressed her controversial old tweet where she had referred to Ranbir Kapoor as a “serial skirt chaser” and Deepika Padukone as a “self-proclaimed mental illness patient.”
In a promo for her appearance on Aap Ki Adalat, when questioned by host Rajat Sharma about her comment, Kangana responded with laughter and remarked, “Aap toh aise bol rahe hai jaise wo Swami Vivekanand ho” (You’re talking as though he is Swami Vivekananda).
Kangana’s original tweet, posted back in 2020, criticized the preferential treatment she believed was given to certain Bollywood celebrities, including Ranbir and Deepika, especially in the media.
She pointed out how despite Ranbir’s several box office failures, he still managed to secure major roles in films like Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju. Kangana has been outspoken about her views on Bollywood’s star kids and has often targeted industry figures like Alia Bhatt, Sonam Kapoor, and Ananya Panday.
Kangana is currently gearing up for the release of her film Emergency, in which she portrays the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The film, directed by Kangana herself, features an ensemble cast including Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik. The movie is based on the period of the Emergency in India in 1975.
Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency, which was anticipated for release on September 6, is currently facing significant delays and controversy. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has not yet responded to claims by Kangana that the film’s certification has been halted due to threats against its members. Kangana alleges that these threats are related to the film’s depiction of sensitive historical events and figures, including Indira Gandhi’s assassination, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, and the Punjab riots.
The film’s trailer, which showcased Bhindranwale and the Khalistan movement, triggered a strong backlash from Sikh organizations. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), along with other groups such as the Akal Takht and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), have raised concerns that the film misrepresents Sikh history and portrays Sikhs in a negative light. These organizations have sent legal notices to the CBFC, called for a ban on the film, and even filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Punjab and Haryana High Court to block its release.
The SGPC, particularly, has issued notices accusing the film of depicting Sikhs as terrorists and separatists, which they argue is both offensive and inaccurate. Shiromani Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal has requested that the SGPC review the film before its release to prevent any potential defamation of the Sikh community.
Adding to the controversy, Kangana recently faced internal criticism from the BJP regarding her comments on the 2020-21 farmers’ protests. This led to a meeting with BJP president J.P. Nadda, where she was advised to be cautious with her public statements, especially in the context of her film promotion.
The situation around Emergency remains tense, with ongoing protests and legal actions complicating the film’s path to release.
