After winning several accolades and awards, recent one being National Award, for his directorial debut MARY KOM, filmmaker Omung Kumar is now all set to helm Sarabjit biopic. Though Omung was supposed to start a film on war as his second film and two other projects, he finalized Sarabjit within a week. And even Omung is mighty surprised about it!

Says Omung, “Yes I was to direct other projects. Other three films were lined-up. But when Sandeep and Zeishan (producer-partner) came to me with Sarabjit project I got excited to direct. Within a week everything got finalized and I took the film in hand. Now I am happy to announce my second film after MARY KOM, which just won National Award.”
Since MARY KOM was a biopic and now his second venture is also incidentally a biopic, ask Omung if he is getting typecast and he says candidly, “No I don’t think I’ll get typecast and all because of it. When my other films will come everyone will forget it and realise that I can direct various genres.”
But after doing a biopic like MARY KOM that too on a grand scale it will be fairly easy for Omung to direct yet another biopic? “SARABJIT is beyond MARY KOM. It’s much complicated, sensitive subject to be dealt with. Mary Kom was about sports, drama, fun, and being sporty. Sarabjit biopic has many layers so it has to be treated carefully,”Omung clears
Earlier it was reported that filmmaker Subhash Ghai had roped in Sonakshi Sinha to play Sarabjit’s sister, Dalbir, for a film on Sarabjit being produced by his banner, Mukta Arts, however it was shelved by the production house.

While MARY KOM starred Priyanka Chopra, probe Omung if he has thought of any name for his next and if he will once again consider commercial actor and he says, “No we haven’t finalized anyone. As of now it’s anybody’s project. I do have few names in mind but I don’t want open up any speculations. The announcement will be made in few days. But the film will definitely star a known name.”
Omung has already started the research work. The film will go on floors in the first week of October with a start-to-finish 60-day schedule. It will be shot in and around Punjab. The Sarabjit biopic will be send to Cannes next year and it will release by the end of May 2016.
The rights are with Zeishan Quadri. And he also had an NOC from Sarabjit’s sister and the family.
