Mumbai Court sentenced Ram Gopal Varma (RGV), the eminent film producer, to a three-month jail term in this long-pending bouncing check case. This verdict was issued by the Andheri Magistrate Court after seven years of hearings, and also ordered a non-bailable warrant against the filmmaker.

The case is based on a plaint filed in 2018 by Maheshchandra Mishra, a trustee for Shree Company, claiming that a check issued by RGV’s firm had been dishonored due to insufficient funds. RGV was convicted for dishonoring a check under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
Besides, the court directed Varma to pay ₹3.75 lakh as compensation to the complainant within three months; in case of failure, he shall note a further three months’ imprisonment.
As for background, the case pertains to a cheque for ₹2.38 lakh, issued by Varma and dishonoured. Ram Gopal Varma got bail in 2022 on a personal bond and a cash deposit of ₹5,000. Once again, the filmmaker stayed away from the court proceedings on January 21, 2025, having previously missed a couple of hearings.
On his X (formerly Twitter) account after the verdict, RGV responded to the controversy by writing:
“I want to clarify, regarding the news on my account and that of Andheri court, this has to do with a 7-year-old case of ₹2 lakh 38 thousand about my ex-employee. This being in court, my advocates are taking care of it, therefore I cannot say much further.” The court clarified that no set-off would be granted under Section 428 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
With regard to the news about me and Andheri court, I want to clarify that it is to do with a 7 year old case of Rs 2 lakh 38 thousand amount , relating to my ex-employee .. My advocates are attending to it. and since the matter is in court i cannot say anything further
